How are we not talking about this? Me and some other parents are kind of running a side pool about which dads/coaches will get tossed first. The suspensions seem a tad out of control, as a rogue power-hungry ref could do a lot of damage.

We have parents cussing at 16 year old refs on our team. I think this is a good policy. But yes, I am also wondering who will get ejected 1st on our team this season. |
| I think they need to come out with a way to review the refs after the game. It's easier to stay quiet when a kid is to scared to blow a whistle over anything and is just standing around not doing their job, when you know you can provide feedback. |

Love it. People need to be held accountable. It’s a GAME.
Honestly, I so rarely see the type of behavior. But, when you do see it, it ruins the game for everyone. |
| There has to be some balance between ref and coach/parents. After watching years of my DD/DS games, there a plenty of bad refs. some really bad calls, some don't even understand soccer rules, some even ends the game early without knowing how long each half is. Refs cannot just blame sideline when some of them are horrendous |
| Refs need to learn offside rules. |
So do a lot of parents, a lot of players, and a lot of coaches. |
| I'm a current referee and so is my kid. We referee everything except MLS Next and not because of the level, but because we don't need to go to Alexandria, Loudoun, or Springfield to get plenty of ECNL, ECNL-R, and EDP matches to ref. We prefer to avoid having to get on 495 and Loudoun is too far. Anyway...we have not heard one peep about this from any of the referee associations or any of the assignors. I learned about it from my son's club team. It's funny that NCSL has shared it with team managers but the NCSL referee assignor hasn't mentioned a word. I'm sure it will be ignored and it probably should. No one is going to suspend kids for this many matches, especially NCSL. Speaking of policies not shared with referees, I was doing an ECNL game about a month ago and the center referee had to stop the game to warn to the home team coach about complaining. The visiting team coach said...ECNL made an announcement this year that if a referee has to stop the game to speak to a coach about his behavior, it is an automatic red card. I told the visiting coach that no one has shared that announcement with me or any referees that I know. To this day, I'm not sure if he was serious. So who knows. These policies go in one ear and out the other. |
| For all you hoping that dads will get tossed, these are player suspensions. |
Yeah, technically, referees have no authority over spectators/parents. When spectators act up, the referee has the authority to go to the coach and have the coach deal with the spectators/parents. If it continues, the referee can card the coach, but....more often, the referees toss parents and hold the game up until they leave. The leagues, clubs, etc should make that more clear as well. |
I’m almost 100 percent positive this includes spectators. They don’t want no more abuse towards refs from anyone. |
|
The ref situation is a real problem that won't be fixed anytime soon. Due to shortages and hostile working environments, we have some really bad refs out there right now. (And I don't just mean the 16 year olds...the worst are the power-tripping adults who are really bad at their jobs.)
None of that excuses ridiculous adult behavior and people shouldn't be full of fear when they referee. But when families are paying lots of money and time to get screwed over by some clown who likes being the center of attention...its pretty rough. Don't see an end in sight to be honest. |

My husband is a ref. Last weekend, he was working as AR and a player said to him on the field, "You suck, ref!" Boom, 2 game suspension.
Parents should definitely remind their kids about these new rules. |
|
It has been brought up in the referee abuse thread.
What I would like to know is whether showing the card is necessary. Can a 15 year old ref whose is abuse during a game can hold it because they are scared (or fame management), then after the game give the red card in the game report to the assignor. I am told this is perfectly OK to do. |

well at least the wokeness police got their say. Threating it come after someone in the parking lot is about 1/2 the punishment for saying "women refs stink"
