Look at these article photos, and pictures of the tents built at Gitmo, historical images of Auschwitz, Japenese internments camps, slave ships. Then tell me that this Administration is not planning for the same.
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cj4nrdnp018o For the record, I completely get how/why El Salvador built Cecot. But when they did that were they expecting all this press and al these visits? Are they now trying to be the jail country? And if so what’s in it for them? |
Expecting the attention? Bukele is the driving force behind it. His background is in marketing/advertising. His government produced the videos, not just the ones we have seen, the many before!
What is in for them? I mean, El Salvador has gone from one of the highest (the highest?) murder rate in Latin America to arguing that it is "the safest." They have rounded up gang members and jailed them and drastically reduced crime. The benefits are obvious. But at what cost? *human rights violations *lack of due process *random arrests to meet quotas It is horrifying. The ends do not justify the means. |
This is Bukele's sense of humor, much appreciated by the trump administration.
*** A judge then ordered the planes back, telling the government's lawyers verbally that they should do so "however that's accomplished — whether turning around the plane or not." But the court order was never heeded, and the planes stayed the course. "Oopsie…too late," El Salvador's president, Nayib Bukele, posted on X after the deportees landed in his country. He included an emoji crying with laughter. The post was reshared by the White House's director of communications, Steven Cheung. (https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c9wpek7p0kno) |
You don't get how advertising that crime doesn't pay could make a country appealing? And what's in it for them sees to be a suddenly functional country. Despite all the complaints from the usual suspects the country is actually nice to live in for the first time in generations. |
I'd like to know who you mean when you say "the usuals suspects" so dismissively. Are you talking about the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights at the UN? Because a lot of us respect the UN. The United States was founded on principles of liberty, justice, and equality. It is un-American to gloss over human rights abuses. |
How do we define equality here?
Some people think everyone should have the same income. Do you agree? |
Think about this picture whenever you see a Republican. This is their dream, or the dream of their chosen leaders, for half of America. They are hitting the easiest targets first. "Collateral damage" is no concern to them.
Connect the dots. Listen to how Trump and Homan and Leavitt and Hegseth as rest speak. They chant "deport him" and "lock her up" at anyone who isn't a toadie. |
Jails are for-profit businesses…at least they are in the US. So, money. Money is the impetus. And perhaps they are negotiating for other things as well when agreeing to work with Trump? |
Pretty disgusting |
What was occurring in El Salvador vs the U.S. are very different things. And noting that crime doesn’t pay with gang murders vs kidnapping students on the street vs citizens doing minor things is very different. Further it’s one thing to build a prison to eradicate crime on your country it’s another to now be holding and actively seeking another country’s people. There is a between advertising crime doesn’t pay vs turning it into a three ring circus. And when we keep letting the be private prisons for profit the driving force doesn’t become crime reduction and rehabilitation it becomes profit. Which in turns breeds corruption as history has shown. |
Not many people think that! The vast majority of Americans are capitalists and you know it, unless you have been sucked too deeply into the alt right world. |
Most people are not losing sleep over Venezuelan gang members being deported. The administration needs to get its act together and make sure they aren't deporting US ciitizens but overall this is policy popular with most Americans. Were these people in our country illegally or not? Do you want to win the next election or not? |
Money is right. El Salvador is getting $6 million for housing the initial group of prisoners for one year. https://www.dallasnews.com/news/immigration/2025/03/15/us-to-pay-6-million-to-el-salvador-to-imprison-alleged-tren-de-aragua-gang-members/ |
You are correct that most Americans don’t care about Venezuela gang members being deported. But the thing that should concern all of us is that most did not receive due process, and some appear to have been sent their mistakenly. Like the gay make up artist. Or the young man with the autism awareness tattoo. Or the women in the group that were sent to El Salvador and promptly returned by the El Salvadoran government because it does not accept female prisoners. |
Or the professional goalie/youth soccer coach. Who followed every legal channels to apply for asylum. He was here legally and has no criminal record anywhere. He's been playing soccer and training kids! The only evidence against him are a tattoo of a crowned soccer ball and a photo with the sign language I love you. YOU SHOULD LOSE SLEEP OVER SENDING HIM TO A SALVADORAN PRISON. YOU SHOULD LOSE SLEEP OVER THE LACK OF DUE PROCESS. I am shouting so you can hear this. You are a traitor to American values if you are ok with this. The Constitution |
