How do we rebuild our government?

Anonymous
I follow Angry WH Staffer on BlueSky. They say that they think our democracy will survive but will need to be rebuilt. What will that look like?

How do we make sure we never again elect someone so incredibly unqualified for the position of potus? It is not an exaggeration to say that Trump could not pass a HS Civics class. He has no use for norms or decorum. Maga says his personality doesn’t matter, but it does. When you are a world leader, your personality flaws can literally start a war.

His mental capacity is rapidly declining, but he can just refuse access to his medical report.

He blatantly profits from his position. Doesn’t even try to hide it. Yet nobody can do anything about it. He just refuses the norm of sharing his tax returns and, that too, is shrugged off.

Our checks and balances are gone. Rule of law is gone. It has only been 2 months. Nobody can figure out how to hold him accountable for anything.

He is intentionally choosing the most unqualified people for his cabinet positions, and they cruise through confirmation anyway.

He put a foreign entity and a group of college kids in charge of our agencies and gave them unfettered access to all our information. He is letting them decide who gets to keep their jobs.

So what do we do? Trump and maga want to talk about government waste. Instead of pointing the finger at civil servants, why not point the finger at the hundreds of elected officials who are powerless over a 78 year old bankrupt real estate mogul turned reality tv host who also happens to be a convicted felon?

Maga, you should also be concerned. In politics, the pendulum always swings. How will you feel when all of above can be said about the next democratic president?

What needs to happen to reign in the power of the potus and make sure this never happens again?

It needed to be rebuilt after Trump's first term. I mistakenly thought Biden intended to oversee that rebuilding. Unfortunately, the Biden Administration slow-walked the accountability part of rebuilding, did nothing to close the loopholes Trump exposed, and thought holding Trump up as a existential threat would force people to keep Dems in power.

All that to say, we won't be able to rebuild anything until we rid ourselves of politicians, on both sides, who believe they can exploit and benefit from the existing status quo.

We probably need a new constitution that has the safeguards that more modern countries have that include ethics rules, term limits (for elected officials and judicial appointments)

We also have to get money out of politics. Citizens United and the buying of the supreme court has lent legitimacy to everything that has happened in the 21st century.

Laws and rules and things like impeachments are human constructs that only work if the people elected and appointed abide by the oaths they are sworn to. We have gotten very far away from that over the last 20 years.

We need to have a parliament. Two parties are not enough. No more elections for a president. Vote for parties. Force them to make coalitions and have a prime minister. Centrists are drown out by extremists on both sides. I could see 4-6 parties having representation.

Citizen's United needs to be killed. Donor limits by individuals and organizations.

The two things that will help right away are:
1) Ranked choice voting
2) Mandatory publicly financed campaigns

It’s actually pretty simple to implement but the problem is that these efforts are blocked by powerful interests.

I’d like to read up on American resistance history to better understand what we can do, because it’s worked in the past.

The Constitution is a living document. It can be changed and was meant to be. We can also pass new laws. If we want to rebuild the place to start would be with electing new people to Congress and being sure to really teach History and Economics to kids.

The Constitution needs some serious changes. Maximum age on running for Congress. Maximum age on being President. Maximum age on SCOTUS. A Republican Senator has been having seizures and people are acting like it's fine. A Republican House member was in a memory care home for six months before people figured out where she wasn't and why she wasn't voting. Democrats have people that are completely captured by the wealthy and ignore their base and some that are so old that if they weren't so powerful would be in a retirement home. Someone can stay in the Supreme Court even if they can't speak. Impeachment is basically impossible even in the worst circumstances because the party that doesn't have the President would never vote for it hoping they'd get to replace the person after the next election.

This country was never meant to be a gerontocracy.

That’s a fake account.

It’s too soon to think about rebuilding. The first is to stop the bleeding.

Make sure you are calling your elected officials every single day and telling them they need to hold Trump accountable. Tell House they need to impeach (they won’t but they need to start hearing this is our word demand). Tell senators they need to use school procedural tools to grind the Senate to a halt. Throw out words like deny, unanimous, consent, and call a quorum.

Attend Tesla Takedown’s, join in April 5 event. Talk to friends and neighbors and family, remind them that this is not OK and ask them to call their lawmakers and to stand up.

I don't think Angry is a "fake" account but it's def resistance porn. Lots and lots of false hope over the last decade. Some kind of anonymous insider oracle whose predictions somehow are always a week away from coming true.

How do we rebuild? I have no idea. I don't think we're anywhere ready to even think about it because we don't know what we'll be working with yet. Let's get through the next four years.

Tim Walz is going around talking about rebuilding, if you want to follow someone who uses their actual name and never promised we'd see Trump in an orange jumpsuit.

Or, edn gerrymandering, the electoral college and voter suppression.

The more parties we have, the better Republicans will do

The only reason Democrats kept this past election close was by wildly outspending Republicans. We should be careful what we wish for.

We need to educate the voters. Until they admit they made a mistake choosing Trump over Harris, we have no functioning democracy

We need more urban black folks voting and fewer rural white folks voting.
