Why do people want to fire the principal of B-CC?

Anonymous
My DD is a student at B-CC, and lately we've both been hearing a lot of talk about folks who want the principal fired. Does anyone know why this is? Has he done anything wrong? Are the lockdowns involved? Any insight is appreciated, thanks

Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School.

Here is my personal assessment: 80% of what people are upset about are things totally outside of his control. He does not make county-wide or federal policy, B-CC objectively has a complicated student mix with very wealthy families and less wealthy families that have different needs and expectations, it’s geographic location in downtown Bethesda creates some unique issues after sporting events, he can’t control SWAT-ing calls from out of state, etc.

And, it takes a very special person to be excellent at managing the students and parents of a school like that. Dr. Mooney is a kind, likeable person who cares deeply about that school, and I think some parents believe that school would benefit from more of an iron fist approach, which just doesn’t seem to be his personal style.

No dog in this fight as I have no idea who the principal is.

Instead of posting here on an anonymous forum, why don’t you go gossip in person with the actual people you heard this from. You do know that your kid’s principal is neither an elected person nor a celebrity. How about giving them the decency to not trash them online by looking for gossip?

Other than the location in downtown Bethesda, what makes it so different from Blair which seems to have less of these problems. Similar mix of kids I think.

This isn't anything new and this was always the dynamic even 30 years ago. At a different school but our principal is very ineffective, and wants to be the kids friend over principal. We just had a principal intern and they were much stronger and the kids clearly respected them more and the school was much better run.

There is a lot more wealth from Bethesda and chevy chase at BCC than Blair.

Isnt there already a thread about this high school that was posted recently? About a principal and a letter or op Ed. There must be many parents or teachers & stakeholders from this school on this forum beause you hear this high school's name come up quite often on the mcps forum.

My understanding based on other h threads is that people think he’s too nice and therefore unable to respond in a sufficiently strict way to some of the disciplinary problems, or unable to raise enough he’ll with the district to get the right support.
My understanding of McPS generally is that principals really need to be able to both work the system and be a squeaky wheel. For instance our Hs last year was way under allotment for security guards and eventually the principal was able to complain enough that we are sufficiently staffed now (I guess). I would guess that the principals who are perceived as less squeaky wheels get a lot of disciplinary problems dumped in their lap plus don’t get the resources that other schools do. I don’t know if that’s true with BCC but I think there’s a perception that it may be.
