I'm looking for challenging reads that are still appropriate for a 3rd grader. Lexile score ~1200. Any suggestions? |
There are eleven million threads on this in the elementary school forum if you use the search function. AAP != advanced reader (1/4 of AAP students are actually below grade level in reading) and advance reader != AAP. - AAP parent |
So do you have any book recs? Not OP but I could use some as well. |
Super helpful. Glad you weighed in. |
The only one that comes to mind that would approach that level is Just-So Stories by Kipling, with a Lexile of 1190. Its prose, while dense, is very beautiful - with a lyrical quality. I highly recommend reading it aloud with your child.
My suggestion is to focus primarily on enjoyment, with a secondary focus on literary merit, and forget about Lexile ratings. A third grader who is reading at a Lexile level of 1200 will be able to read anything they want or need to. They don’t need to practice their reading so much as take advantage of their skill to expand their knowledge and stoke their imagination. |
How do you know the chlld's lexile? My child is a fluent reader but wants to read Dog Man. |
I saw it on her iready scores (which i know aren't super reliable) and wondered if I should be encouraging her to read more challenging books. But the poster above made a great point. As long as she's enjoying reading I probably should just let her do her thing. |
I have tons of book recs. I have typed them up umpteen times in the elementary school aged forum, where people ask these kinds of questions all the time. For ex: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1258812.page (4th-5th but plenty of these I would let my current 3rd grader read) https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1240608.page (for a 1st grader, but for read aloud so they will be harder but age appropriate) https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/808559.page (again, 1st grade read aloud) |
Harry Potter, Wings of Fire, Percy Jackson, Warriors series..
My kids is advance reader, not sure about the lexile.. that some of the book they enjoy 3-6th grade |
Thank you for linking these here! |
Not OP but thank you. I appreciate these recs. |
I'm very confused. Lexile score of 1200? What was your child's iready score for reading? My child had a 560 in spring of 1st grade and the lexile range that was reported was 720L-870L. I'm guessing your child is off the charts and should be reading War and Peace. |
Not OP and IMHO Lexile scores are basically worthless for assessing reading comprehension. Only useful for the most basic reading levels. Ask your kid regularly to summarize what they're reading to figure out if they are getting it. |
I don't think many books actually have a lexile that high. If you google lexile for popular high school English class fiction options, they still often fall around 1000 or lower, 800s, even. To Kill a Mockingbird, Cry the Beloved Country, Grapes of Wrath, Cather in the Rye, etc. are all lower than 1000. |
