NIH RIF approx 3700

Anonymous
Hello ,
Is it correct information based on this [url] https://www.govexec.com/workforce/2025/03/nih-faces-renewed-doge-directive-cut-staff-pre-covid-levels-putting-thousands-line-rifs/403593/

I was in impression most of the reduction is done.. are we still expecting more layoffs ? How we see chances of government shut down ?
Please share your thoughts ..
Thank you

Yes, NIHers should expect to see more.

The number I’ve heard for the past couple of weeks is 2500, which is in line with this article saying 3400, and the fired probationaries coming off that total brings it to about 2500.

Shutdown is anyone’s guess now. The House’s proposed CR has to get nearly every single GOP vote, but has anyone read/heard how the Senate is viewing this CR?

If the GOP unite they can get it done . Looking at current scenario it’s possibility and they will avert shut down but let’s see

Yes, more layoffs, but keep in mind that a lot of NIH staff are retiring, through various means available. Three of my staff have retired in the last two months and my boss is retiring at the end of this month.

Also, be aware of this information but don’t get too hung up on it. Psyops is a very real part of this assault on Feds.

Has NIH gotten any specs about the HHS-authorized VERA, like when people have to retire by? The HHS agency I work for has not, but there seems to be a ton of interest and lots of eligible people.

NIH has received guidance for both VERA and VISP. Deadline to indicate interest is 3/14.

Yes, that's the general HHS guidance, but doesn't answer the question of what the deadline is for when people need to take retirement or leave the agency. For example, SEC has to retire by 4/30, whereas SSA has until 12/31.

A date hasn’t been mentioned in any emails, which is so bush league. But I’ve been told it’s by April 19 for VERA retirement.

Reorganization at NIH is just getting started. It remains to be seen how many will avail of VERA/VSIP.

I just wonder where these percentages come from. I could understand if they said we are closing labs 1, 2 and 5 or we are eliminating front line manager positions. Do the musketeers just come up with a number and expect the executives to figure out how to meet it.

I’m curious to see how many will actually take it. The NIH VERA Zoom session last week had overwhelming interest and several people complained that they could not log on.

Yep! Our agency's HR office keeps saying they've gotten no VERA details from HHS except to find out who's interested. More info about the VSIP is supposed to come out tomorrow because apparently not everyone at our agency is eligible (which would be true regardless because you have to have so many years of service, etc.).

d
DOGE is dropping numbers on the ICs.

I don’t get how they are supposed to put a rif list together by Friday. When they won’t even know the number of people who take VERA until Friday. Makes me think they don’t care and will continue to cut
