Summer weight training for a rising 9th grader?

Anonymous
My 8th grader is very athletic. He plays 3 sports on his school's teams. He's very tall, but with a slight build. He wants to put on some muscle this summer before starting high school. Is there a safe way for him to do weight training with a trainer who specializes in adolescents? Where would I find such a trainer and how should I verify their expertise? Since my son is still growing its important to find someone who knows how to build muscle specifically in a teenager without causing harm or injury.

A large part of putting on visible muscle is testosterone. So, while weight training may make your son stronger and help his athletic performance, he might not see the physical changes he hopes to see.

St. Johns has this summer program that I have heard good things about, although my kid hasn't done it:

Yes! Look up sports performance places in your area. My 8th grade DS goes to one- the trainer comes up with an individual workout plan, and it is closely supervised at all times (with form corrections made etc). Progress is measured periodically. The place my son attends is mostly tweens-teens and he loves it. He does strength training, some agility type training etc.

That sounds perfect! Would you mind sharing the name of the facility that your DS trains at? It sounds exactly like what we are looking for. A place with mostly tweens and teens sounds exactly right. Thank you!

Yes it is great! We made a cross country move a few years ago so the location won’t help. Google “adolescent sports training” or “teen sports performance” or similar in your area and there is almost certainly something similar. Our metro area has several.

If you're in McLean/Falls Church/Arlington area- Capstone is good for this as is Falls Church Athletics.

Where do you live? When my kid was that age we hired this trainer for sports training. He was great with him. https://www.kamlifeconsulting.com/programs

SYC offers youth powerlifting coached by a guy from D1 training. Also, D1 training is just right for kids getting into weight training. They specialize in kids age groups with weights, agility and fitness combo classes.

And I think studies have come out in recent times (within1-3 years) that indicate weight training has a lot of upsides for growing kids and doesn't seem to harm kids growth plates.

My teen and tween have done this at Capstone and Falls Church Athletics and had good experiences with both.

We had a bad experience with Capstone, just dropped communication, poor professionalism.

We prefer Nova perfect performance
