White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt on Thursday jabbed at Canada as “our soon-to-be 51st state” ahead of a hockey game between the U.S. men’s national team and its neighbors to the north.
President Trump “looks forward to watching the game tonight,” Leavitt told reporters as the U.S. team readies to go up against Canada in Thursday’s 4 Nations Face-Off championship game. “And we look forward to the United States beating our soon-to-be 51st state, Canada.” https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/5155701-white-house-on-hockey-game-we-look-forward-to-us-beating-soon-to-be-51st-state/ |
Canadian living in Canada here.
We're all taking it seriously. Shoppers aren't buying American goods, people are suddenly interested in joining the military, and even Quebec is feeling the patriotism. We all know that if the US were to actually invade, we'd fall within hours. Most people aren't willing to die on day one but we'd wreck havoc as the "51st state", which we all know would be a territory with no rights. |
I hate Trump. This treatment of Canada is not funny.
But this does mention invasion. Trump is hoping to use economic leverage. I don't think he knows how states join the union though. He probably thinks it's just up to him. |
We are literally playing with fire. Any goodwill we had with Canada is gone. Rightfully so.
|
Do you think that it has occurred to him that a majority of the US will take the side of Canada? |
The USA needs allies. Alienating Canada and Europe and cozying up to Russia and Saudi Arabia is utter lunacy and dangerous for national security. |
I took a look at r slash military (which is only a subst of our military) and they are scared. They are discussing, in carefully apolitical language, the duty to refuse unlawful orders, such as a hypothetical unlawful order to invade Canada. And exactly how to refuse the order and explain why. |
I wish Trump would STFU! |
Nobody is invading Canada.
Trump is an idiot, and he likes to apply his Queens real estate tactics to everything. That means saying outrageous things, to get his negotiating adversary to blink in order to stave off an imaginary catastrophe. The smart thing to do is ignore him, and not give an inch. Tariffs are another deal - I’m sure he’s serious about those. A Canadian boycott makes sense to wield economic pressure, but honestly it has to be pretty targeted to have an impact on the massive US economy. |
Please let them be the heroes we need! |
Not a pro hockey fan, but watched the Miracle on Ice in real time, so am a fan of the USMNT as well as the women's team.
I'm not watching tonight. Despise the US coach for stoking the nationalism as well as the players are whooping it up with chants of "51st"! I don't have a problem with politics in sports - but that doesn't mean I will then watch it. |
They do seem to have targeted plans. We can help it out by also boycotting red state goods and buying Canadian. |
What are you going to do about potash? |
That is sickening! Zero sportsmanship. |
Definitely doing that as much as feasible. One idea I heard was boycotting Bourbon since it’s a 95% red state export and a fair amount of it goes to Canada. |
