Women-rowing

I just started rowing and I love it!! If you are a woman and row how much has your body changed? How so? How much do you row? I don’t want to bulk up. I just want to tone. Did it help your legs in anyway? Thanks!

Do you row on the water?

No sorry. I have a concept2.

It won’t bulk you up, OP. You’d have to add weight lifting to your rowing. That would make you a stronger rower, but simply rowing for fitness - even rowing a lot, and as hard as you can - won’t make you bulky.

I’m a lifelong rower. I am strong and fit but I do not have super defined muscles, alas.

You will get toned but you won't bulk up. Not even in shoulders. It is a full body workout. I think it is more of an aerobic workout, but it does improve strength. Be sure to add lateral exercises, like side planks because it mostly uses front and back muscles.

Check out RowAlong Youtube channel. You can row along with him if you don't want to try to keep your own stroke rate. Darkhorse Rowing is good too.

Thanks so much PP! This is exactly what i am hoping for. I just want to be fit without too much definition.

Thanks PP! I will check those channels out. I am really hoping to tone up the thighs a bit.

Definition comes from low body fat. If you are not controlling your calorie intake you might not see much of a change because you will likely compensate for the calorie burnt with eating more without even realizing.

Make sure your form is good please! I was on the crew team in HS (coxswain) and the rowers looked amazing. Like so lean and muscular and great ab definitely. It’s a great sport for long lean muscles, for everyone besides the coxswain anyway

Rowing is 100% not going to tone up your thighs. Running, cycling, squats/leg press and lunges will do that. Not rowing.

I have a high school rower and cannot get enough calories in them to gain weight. Granted they also have a high school metabolism.

You can not compare hs kids to adult women. The calorie requirements etc are worlds apart. I have a daughter who does zero exercise and eats all day long and looks like a supermodel.

There are peloton classes for the rower!

I recommend the hydrow app- it’s made by and for rowers and the scenery is great. I’m a big fan!

To answer your question, ditto to what the others said, and also it is the only thing that seems to make my love handles/ waist smaller. Good luck!
