Could this be a reason to delay school?

MLK Jr MS in Germantown was evacuated and closed Thurs morning due to a broken pipe that left the school without water and heat. Reported by moco360

In this situation, they close individual schools. They wouldn't need to close the whole district. I actually taught at a school years ago that had this happen- we weren't allowed to keep the kids there with no water available...and no flushing- eew!

We had a broken pipe at our elementary school a couple of months ago which closed it for a day. Why would they close schools everywhere for that?
Anonymous
No. A couple of years ago, the water sprinkler system was activated by a kid and flooded Westland Middle School, which led to a closure of the school the next day. Those types of incidents do not affect the rest of the schools.

Couldn't they have opened the majority of 211 schools that were cleared and only closed those needing more time shoveling this week?

Schools didn't need shoveling this week.

No schools did and a few of the schools' photos were on the mcps page when they announced school delay

Those pictures were taken Monday morning. They were cleared before the end of the day.

When I was at RMHS 20+ years ago, there was a busted water main in the neighborhood and the school lost water right as we arrived for the day and had to close due to no toilets, drinking water, or fire sprinklers. They couldn't release us immediately because the buses had to go run the MS and ES routes, but as soon as those were done, MCPS ordered the buses to come back to the school and we were all dismissed and on the way home by 9:30. It was actually very smooth.

Weather related closures are always system-wide, because usually all schools are affected at once, and with busing for magnets and special programs, it gets complicated to have uneven attendance at the same school. The state of Walter Johnson parking lot and a few others on Tuesday were the reasons MCPS decided to extend the 2hr delay so crews could have more time to de-ice. It turned out they didn't need the Thursday delay.
