I didn't apply to AAP this year b/c my child's reading ready scores were low, but their scores came back and math is very high and reading is high. I think my child belongs in advanced math (teacher has complained that they rush on their homework and turn it in before the school day ends, but the answers are always correct) and would like to request that they get pushed in. I don't think our school does push ins, but they do principal place. How can I ask for that? |
Talk to your teacher and principal, but most schools that offer advanced math have a set means of determining who is in those classes. |
Our ES tested everyone for advanced math. My DS was in advanced math even though he wasn't Level IV (or Level III for that matter). |
A couple years ago my kid's school said there were criteria set by the county for placing non-AAP students in advanced math. I think it was test scores like iready or SOL, can't remember exactly. |
Our school uses the iReady in third grade to determine math placement. How high was your child's math iready? If it was that high I would hope you'd have good justification for advanced math. |
I would guess that the Teachers complain about homework being rushed means that he is being messy or not writing out the steps. I would ask the Teacher what you child needs to focus on with his math. I know that people push back on the idea that math answers need to have the steps written out but that is a skill that is necessary as kids advance. Getting into that habit at a young age is good for kids. And it shows the TEacher that the kids understand the different strategies that are being taught. |
Our school was >90th percentile on iReady or pass advance on last year's SOL. |
The schools should be screen all children for Subject Specific placement in May, however you can parent refer outside of that window.

So if a kid's math iReady was 98th percentile, is that high enough? |
3rd grade math is things like draw pictures to show you can multiply. There are no steps to write out, all work that needs to be shown is shown. The rushing was because this teacher insists that children do homework at home instead of at school. My child now does it on the bus on the way home, LOL. |
I was just talking with my child about this tonight. He said "They want me to write how I got the answer to '4 + 8'." For him this is so basic he doesn't understand why they are asking and what they want. Also, kids aren't great at introspection so it's a bit silly to be asking for this and evaluating them on it as part of their math skills assessment. |
Is advanced math in third grade every day with an advanced math group? Or is it less than that? Everyone says Level IV is just advanced math, but I've also heard that those who are in Level III for math just get 45 minutes a week. Not sure what to believe. |
Advanced math is going to vary widely by school. Some ES don't even offer advanced math until 5th grade. You need to actually speak to your AART or current teacher if you want specific answers. |
If a kid is 98th percentile, they belong in adv math. |
What they mean is that Level IV really isn’t advanced in all areas of study. The kids do not dive that much deeper into Social Studies or Science and the LA extensions are pretty commonly taught in many regular class rooms at MC/UMC schools. The main area where kids are accelerated is math. Advanced Math uses the same curriculum as Level IV math. Level III is a 45-60 minute pull out once a week that tends to cover the same topics as the extensions in LIV classrooms. It is meant to be fore kids who are ahead in LA but not ready for Advanced Math. There are kids who are in Advanced Math or LIII with some in both. |
