I didn't apply to AAP this year b/c my child's reading ready scores were low, but their scores came back and math is very high and reading is high. I think my child belongs in advanced math (teacher has complained that they rush on their homework and turn it in before the school day ends, but the answers are always correct) and would like to request that they get pushed in. I don't think our school does push ins, but they do principal place. How can I ask for that?
I would guess that the Teachers complain about homework being rushed means that he is being messy or not writing out the steps. I would ask the Teacher what you child needs to focus on with his math. I know that people push back on the idea that math answers need to have the steps written out but that is a skill that is necessary as kids advance. Getting into that habit at a young age is good for kids. And it shows the TEacher that the kids understand the different strategies that are being taught.
I was just talking with my child about this tonight. He said "They want me to write how I got the answer to '4 + 8'." For him this is so basic he doesn't understand why they are asking and what they want. Also, kids aren't great at introspection so it's a bit silly to be asking for this and evaluating them on it as part of their math skills assessment.
