School delayed and no sports or activities for 3 days straight just for cold weather?!?

Anonymous
I am sorry but this is getting out of hand. So many musicals, concerts, after school clubs, school events, sports just cancelled after missing so much time already.

Overall everyday feels like a fluff day and kids are out of sync.

We never had delays for cold weather. It’s not even that bad out. What are we doing here?!?

Zero risk tolerance. Shut it down out of an abundance of caution.

Kids are safer in the warm schools. I don’t get the delays and kicking everyone out after school.

Yup. It was never this bad. Ridiculous.

MCPS is not a serious place.

Yeah I gotta say, I don't get it at all.

Maybe it's some kind of power trip.

You must be new here. We have delays for "cold weather" every year there's cold weather. We got a reprieve for a the last couple, because it was unseasonably warm, but this is not the first year we've had polar vortex-related delays/cancellations.

Exactly. Plenty of little kids will be home and this also worsens the attendance as parents go to work and kids do NOT go to the bus stop alone (the little ones) and just stay home.

Here and there for temps below 0 degrees, yes. It is 20 degrees right now. It will be 31 degrees on Thursday.

And many kids/teens NEED sports, activities, socialization after school. I don’t understand this at all.

Many poor families have limited heat too and not to mention free breakfast at school.

I understood the message to say activities today after 530 are canceled and, in addition, there will be a 2 hour delay Wednesday and Thursday.

Orrrrr do they mean Wednesday and Thursday have 2 hour delays AND no activities after 530, as well?

Yes, its an issue when roads are slick, buses struggle to run, kids have to walk home in the dark/ice/no sidewalks.

Field trips are cancelled too.

AM Pre-K has basically been off since before the holidays. This is not ok.

They don't NEED it, they want it. They can socialize at school or outside school. If socialization is only at school, that's on you. Kids can do sports and activities outside MCPS if you don't like how MCPS does it.

Stop blaming poor families for your wants. Poor families can get utility help through MEAP and other county programs. Poor families can get food stamps, food pantry, etc.
