WIC..pay for each item separately?

| I was at the grocery store the other day and got in line behind a woman that had maybe 12 items. Thought this was a smart move as the other line was ridiculously long. So here I am with my two kids that and my groceries are on the belt and this woman proceeds to check out EACH ITEM SEPARATELY! She was using WIC checks and literally paid for each item in a new transaction with a different check. I stood there for almost 25 minutes waiting. It was beyond ridiculous. Is this how WIC works? You have to pay for each item separately? What a time suck. I wasn't sure if I was more happy/blessed that I wasn't in a sitution where I needed to be on WIC or just plain irritated at the whole fiasco. Then we walk to the parkign lot and the woman is getting into her Lincoln Navigator. Tried to think that the car was paid off before they got into the situation of needing to be on WIC. Can someone educate me on WIC? |

| She shouldn't need to check out each item separately if she had separate checks. Perhaps she's new to WIC and didn't know how to run it all together in a self-check lane? |

Lincoln Navigator!?!?!?
That annoys me. I don't have a Lincoln Navigator - and I would love one. Maybe if I cheated the system, I too could afford one. UGH |

| Another guess: Perhaps she's helping out a number of WIC recipients by doing some shopping for them-- i.e. like as a volunteer at a shelter or something. That would also explain the Lincoln. |

Stop being so judgemental. Not on WIC but I have a nice car that was paid for in full by a relative. Just hope you and/or your DH don't lose your job, savings, and everything else. |

It depends. I havent been on it in around 6 months. I stopped going because, even though we qualify I hate the whole experience. But when I was going they broke it down into checks for each person on the program and then further into categories: I had checks for food items as a nursing mother until DS was 12 months, then I had milk on a separate check. Then DS got checks with food on it, and separate checks for his milk. THEN DD got checks with her food allotment and separate checks with milk.
And to make it even more fun, when DD was an infant, she stopped nursing at 6 months. So it was my checks, DS's and then DD got separate checks just for formula and then separate checks with just Baby cereal, and another set of checks just with baby juice. All that on top of the aggravating and dehumanizing experience I had every frakking time I had to go to the WIC center to recertify for checks and I said screw it. My husband doesn't understand, but then he never had the pleasure of going with me. |

You are free to do so if you think it's easy enough to do and that it's worth it. If not, shut up because you sound ignorant. Stop coveting what other people have. You don't know how they got it, and coveting is not attractive. |

15:32 here. And how do you know that's what she's doing? I worked, and paid taxes, for 16 years before I had kids and had to sign up for WIC. If the experience of getting checks wasn't so frustrating, and the choices so limited and in some cases unhealthy (I can't have Giant brand organic apple juice, but JUICY JUICE is OK!?! Really?), I'd have no problem taking everything I could get out of the system. I paid enough into it, now that I need help the system can damn well pay me back. |

I am the "ugh" poster and I stand corrected. Not sure what got into me. Just cranky I guess.
To the PP who was on WIC...I sincerely wish you the best. And, it is ridicoulous that the gov't runs a much-needed program like WIC that way! Ignore a-holes like me and go back on WIC if you need. Forget the judgmental people. Sorry for your recent luck |

each check has to be done separately, but not each item. You probably misunderstood what you were seeing, or she had a few checks that had only one item on them.
Also, you can't do WIC via self check out. A cashier has to verify the check and write in the total. signed, a former cashier. |

| I certainly hope we don't lose our jobs too but I was just asking how it worked. Seemed pretty ridiculous. She was only buying fresh produce and all was run under a separate check. Just odd. |

Also, sometimes it seems like the checkout people don't know what they're doing when checking out a customer with WIC checks which might contribute to the long wait.
Waiting in line during one of these transactions can test your patience, but PLEASE dcum community, do not be one of those customers loudly huffing and puffing and complaining from the back of the line (I've witnessed this). I can't imagine how that must make the WIC recipient feel. |

I was on WIC but it was too much of a pain in the ass after we got off formula.
My DS had milk allergies so he was on Nutramigen I was so glad for WIC because there was no way I could afford it otherwise. Since he was on special formula I had to go once a month to the WIC office to get new checks (also a PITA) a typical month broke down like. 8 cans of formula a month with 3 cans on two of the checks and 2 cans on another. then another set of three checks for. eggs beans (they had to be dried too so we just used them for art) cereal Cheese and then another three for milk juice It was also crazy specific like for cereal it was something like 32 oz. and you had to mix and match different boxes of cereal to get it to work out. I always see people in line having problems with this. They do it like this because you have to get everything on the check at the same time so if they were out if say cereal then I could still get the formula and then come back later for the cheese. Also, you are not supposed to get everything at once, you are supposed to break it down by week so at most you have 3 checks at a time but most people go once a month so they could have like 12 or more checks at a time. Anyways once we were off the Formula I stopped doing it because it was so much. It was embarrassing enough that I am advertising that I am on WIC I am fully aware of the groins of the people behind me too. I would always try to go WIC shopping when it was not busy and I would never go into express lanes or anything. Also you can't do self checkout with WIC. I also now know if someone as 4 gallons of milk, 6 boxes of store brand cereal 9 cans of formula and lots of cheese in their cart to not get in line behind them. |
