Why wouldn't every resident of VA apply ED to UVA?

While it is true about extreme wealth pockets at ivies, as we have two at different ivies, the corollary is that there is also more racial diversity and a higher percent of pell-grant recipients/low income, compared to UVA. Overall UVA does give a white-preppy cliquey aura that is not at ivies. Some seems to be the high percentage of NOVA and Central VA parents who all know each other and go to grounds various football weekends in groups. Ivies are not like that because the students come from all over the US and world.

Some years are NoVA HS has zero admits to some of the Ivies, out of 700 students. So, yes, the kid admitted from year to year is top 1% of class.

8%-22% depending on the specific school, and on ED vs not, as well as exact GPA: there is clearly a higher percentage green checks for the GPAs at the very top val/sal range. Some of the top 10% ivy admits are hooked--about 1/4 in that group for those cycles were legacy/URM and most of the '21-25 years URM was a big hook. Recruited athletes are never from the top 10% for top schools, nor UVA.

^8-22% is total inclusive of the 2021-2025 grad years, not each year..as another poster noted some years there were none at many

There are a lot of very wealthy OOS kids at UVA. Then there’s the astronomical wealth in surrounding Albemarle County. It sets the tone.

Why pay an application fee to a school that you are unlikely to be accepted to?

We told our kids that they needed to go in state to keep costs to an acceptable level. They both graduated debt free and they are both employed which was the whole purpose of their college education in the first place.

Hoo boy. There's something I don't think you're "getting" and that is what many posters have already said. Their kids aren't at all interested in UVA in the first place. Perhaps they've visited and were turned off (us). A lot of our kids much prefer VT or WM to UVA - that's a concept that apparently really triggers UVA parents. You might even call it, jealousy.

Agree….when people say this, I always crack up. My kid had 10 other students from his high school going to UVA out of NOVA. They all run in completely different friend groups….and never see each other. My kid has met students from all over the globe being at UVA….definitely not “high school “ repeat.

We went for a visit and we ran into so many kids from high school, from various sports teams, etc. Then, if we didn’t actually know them - pretty much every kid was from Loudoun, Fairfax co or Arlington. The few offshoots were Long Islanders. At my other kid’s private, there are very few from VA. Kids are from all over the world. VA isn’t even widely represented and the school is 7 hours away which is “new”. I think people don’t necessarily use that phrase to mean it is everyone from their same HS- rather a feeling.

It's never helpful to exaggerate or just plain bullshit about facts when they are easily refuted by a quick google search. The fact is that there are more out of state students at UVA than there are from ALL of Northern Virginia combined -- a region that includes not only Arlington, Loudoun and Fairfax but also Alexandria, Prince William, Stafford, Falls Church City, etc. The region has millions of people and thousands and thousands of high school students.

I guess some of the more down to earth uber wealthy kids from Greenwich and NYC (I’m thinking of specific people as I write this) choose UVA so they can get away from too many of their own type of feel special among a sea of NoVa suburbanites. Either way, they’re there in numbers.

There is more racial diversity at the ivies over UVA if by diversity you want a whole lot of Asians. Princeton admitted 5% black kids this year. 5%.
UVA is 12%.

Recruited athletes are often also top 10% kids. At our private alone this year we had 3 HYP kids who were both top 10% kids AND recruited athletes.
