| Happens in our neighborhood quite a lot and I thought it was mostly real estate agents but I recently heard about a post (because it was widely distributed from Tik Tok) where some random person put a slide show of our neighborhood (including my house) noting “this part of DC reminds me of England.” I guess it is legal but it’s also unsettling. Is this preventable? |
| Attempt to prevent it and you'll get Streisand'd. |
| Who cares? Some people in this forum seem to love it when their neighborhoods get as much attention as possible. They'll even use threads about MD neighborhoods to talk about their VA neighborhoods -- they just can't help themselves! |
| Preventable? What are you going to do, hide your house? |
|
Buy an unremarkable/boring house? 😉
|
Cover it in a big tarp! |
Sue them. You have a right to privacy. |
You don’t actually. As long as the photo is taken from a public street without use of an extreme telephoto lens, it is completely legal. Unclear why having the exterior of your house that is viewable from a public road would make you uncomfortable? |
|
Lol.
No, it's not preventable. You want some kind of expectation of privacy with regard to what the outside of your house looks like? If so, you better find something secluded and locked behind a gate. And then people will take pictures of your gate, and you'll whine about that... |
| You do realize you can see your house on google street view?! |
| What about the publication aspect? I wish I could find and repost the slide show. I get using public facilities to photograph something in public but what about putting it on the internet? Additionally, what about the issues associated with the high profile people who have security? Is there an exception? |
Almost every house is viewable on Google, and those that are not people can simply drive to your street and look at it.

Kenwood is lovely in cherry blossom season. |
Again, you seem to have a misunderstanding of what "public space" means. If you don't want your home viewable from public space, you can put up a fence or wall or high shrubs along the street to block the view, along with a gate. That's why you often see those things in expensive neighborhoods in say Los Angeles. They do not have permission to use your likeness of you personally without your consent if you are not a public figure, which is why when you see news reports where a single person might be identifiable, they often just show the person from the chest down. It's also why if you go into an event that is being filmed , they have to post a disclaimer at the door. |
| I don’t have a misunderstanding, I dont have any understanding. That is why is asked. But, this whole thing still has me concerned. Someone walked through the neighborhood, took pictures of private homes and then distributed it to the world. As it happens, it’s a pretty good roadmap to the home of one of the most threatened people in the US. Absent that it’s still troubling but I now understand that it’s permissible. |
