The post below inspired me… I make around $300K but am stuck in a soul crushing, toxic job. I work in marketing for a large global company and am expected to work 60-70 hour weeks and be on call 24/7 with little flexibility. It was much better after the pandemic but over the past year things have crept back to pre-pandemic levels and the workload has become unbearable.
Looking at friends, they either have similar grueling jobs and make a lot of money, or make like $150K and have an easier true 9-5 job with tons of flexibility. But according to DCUM many people here make over $250K and work 40 hours per week, mostly from home/tons of flexibility. So what exactly is your job if this is the case? |
| Federal financial regulator. |
| C suite level. $500k plus bonus. We don’t live in the DC area. 40 hours/week is a long week. It’s usually a lot less. Home by 5/6 most days. |
| What is a marketing person on call for? |
That’s amazing. What industry? |
| In-house counsel - WFH because we are spread out geographically. There are busy periods but overall 40 hrs/wk and manageable. |
| Real estate finance. Wfh and pretty flexible as long as I get my work done in a timely manner |
BS PowerPoint decks, fire drills when sales are lagging. I spend most of my time making presentations to show management our strategy and results, vs doing actual marketing work. |
| My husband does - around 300k a year which usually includes bonuses. He’s a software engineer. |
| I'm just at $250k. Dod contractor management. I put in my time as engine and PM and did long hours. Now it's managing all these ppl and I can do a lot remote. There are few fire drills but I'm home at 5 if I went to the office. We are a smaller company tho. I'd make more at a larger place but it would be way more stress. |
Similar here. My husband is a software engineer and probably closer to $260k or so. He does sometimes work nights or weekends, but he also does school / after care drop offs and pickups, drives our kids to their after school sports etc. (We both work from home, but my hours are a bit less flexible.) Sone weeks he probably works 35 hrs, 40-45 is probably typical, and some weeks are more if it’s before a rollout or something. |

If you’re a marketer for a big brand I’d get into freelance and consultation work.
I worked in digital marketing and now own my own business. Right now I’m working part time as I still have young kids, but I have a stellar portfolio and people pay me whatever I ask. |
| I don't make that much, but all the people I know who seem to have flexibility and a lot of money own their own businesses or work at their spouse's business. They make their schedules and write off a lot of expenses. |
| I am a Software Engineer who WFH fully and never has to work more than 35 hrs, pay is 350k including bonus. |
| The SEC- an accountant |
