AAU Girls Tryouts

Anonymous
I feel like AAU is some sort of secret society and I just don't know the passcode.

We are in Arlington. DD is in 6th grade. Great defender, hustles, is on varsity MS team as a 6th grader. She's interested in AAU. I know about the Hurricanes...it seems like they only go through 5th grade and I hear they are also already have teams set with girls who started when they were in utero. I know about the vogues, they are starting tryouts this coming weekend...but is that for just the winter/spring? Or is that the entire calendar year?

When do tryouts generally happen? What teams am I missing?

It's not a secret society. It's the same organizations every year. They all have websites/social media. Tryout registration is open for some AAU teams and usually begin end of Jan to beginning March. Most organization will field an A, B, and even a C team.

Hurricanes goes through high school. Elevate elite has two teams at most ages, three at some. PVT is miserable unless you like the idea of practice in Bethesda. There are further out teams like Fusion (lost their spot on under armour, so may be rebuilding) and Loudon Flight

A few questions…. Does your daughter play Arlington Travel Basketball (ATB) or is she only playing for her middle school this winter? Which middle school does she currently play for?

Most Arlington girls will try out for Hurricanes. There is movement on teams every year, but Hurricanes is often more competitive than ATB, since it pulls from outside Arlington county.

She does not do Arlington Travel Basketball. We couldn't make both tryouts because of travel soccer...so she clearly wasn't going to make it. She plays for her middle school (it's a private school) and she does Arlington rec. The Hurricanes website is really confusing and looks like it only goes through 5th grade. I emailed with the director today and he said she could go to the elementary school training sessions that start this Friday night. It's not something we can commit to at this point. I am just curious about how the tryouts work. Does every team do it differently? Is it year round? By season? I'm clearly not a sports mom, my older DD is not into sports, so we are just trying to play catch up.

Hurricanes usually has open gyms in late January and tryouts in February for the spring AAU season. I think Hurricanes had two teams last year for that age group.

Is she planning on playing travel soccer in the spring while also playing AAU basketball?

In MoCo in the 3rd/4th grade they seem to take just about everyone especially girls, there just aren't that many teams. I suspect as they get older there are skills gap issues. We have kids that are playing down on our team, until they can get enough skills to play at their appropriate age group. Kind of annoying as the teams are all over the map in terms of ages. Kids playing up kids playing down, you end up with tall 3rd grades playing average 5th graders, enrolling in tournaments where some of the kids might even be sixth graders. I can see how as the teams mature the coaches would be less likely to take on additional kids that haven't developed -And- don't know their systems. Having said that, there is usually some attrition, so the teams will take on additional kids over time. I have also noticed even in the 4th grade tournaments there are recently formed teams, though they get trounced and looked more like 3rd grade teams in organization.

Hurricanes season starts as soon as the teams are formed-- so early March for middle school but later for high school since HS playoffs are in March. Tournaments are not every weekend but as much as the team wants to do until June or July--again at the discretion of the team (and how much they are willing to pay ). Sometimes there is a summer league the teams play in too, but not every team. What is difficult for the girls who play travel soccer is that the basketball tournament schedule doesn't come out until Thursday or Friday before the weekend tournament, so you can't plan on attendance. At the HS level, the travel soccer girls get placed on the lower level teams because of the lack of commitment they can make, but in the end, a lot is left up to the coaches.

DD is interested in Vogues but missed the 1st weekend of tryouts. This would be for 8th G. She has some AAU experience but isn't the best player. What are the chances of making the team with one tryout? Are they well formed?

If your daughter played AAU and plays on the FCYBL County/Travel team, I say your odds are high.

Who is already trying out? Open gyms are just starting. For the Vogues, I would be shocked if they every cut any player who was even moderately ok at basketball. If they are playing FCBYL, they can make a more competitive team

Do they just take anyone or do their teams have roster limits? If 20 show up to tryout they cannot take all 20, right?
