10k budget for Family Trip, preferably international. Out of ideas!

Anonymous
Hi! I need ideas for a fun and cultural family trip for kids 7 and 9. 10k Budget, Prefer international and do not want to repeat a destination we have been to! I would love a place we can get a little more for our money, like luxury hotel rooms under $500 per night.

******
We have been on family trips to Alaska, Hawaii, Miami, Costa Rica, NYC, SF, Mexico, Vancouver, Disneyland, Southern California from LA or San Diego, New York City, Cape May, Austin, Martha's Vineyard, Boston, Rhode Island, Grand Canyon, Utah, New Mexico, Vail, Aspen, Disneyworld, Seattle/Portland and Carmel/Monterey. My husband and I have traveled extensively through Europe so it is not the top of our list.

When we traveled to Europe (France and Italy), the biggest savings came from using Airbnb instead of hotels. In Italy, we stayed at a hotel, and it was over three times the cost of an Airbnb. The hotel offered two tiny connecting rooms for around $1,000 per night, whereas an Airbnb in the same area, with three separate bedrooms, two bathrooms, a washer and dryer, and air conditioning, cost just $350 per night. The Airbnb was highly rated and very nice. The only downside is that you'll need to swap your own sheets and clean. However, some places are cracking down on Airbnbs, likely because hotels are losing revenue to them.

Thanks, I think that's a good option especially for large and expensive cities in Europe but I am really looking for a destination suggestion more than anything.

What time of year?

Over one of the school breaks- Thanksgiving or Spring Break, so roughly 10-11 nights with flights. We can pull the kids a day or two to stay a solid 9 nights.

Thanks, any suggestions.

Peru looks like it would be in our budget. I loved the idea of doing an Amazon trip, including a short amazon river boat for 3-4 nights but that would eat at almost the entire budget it seems.

We have never done a cruise so I don't want to go all in on this trip. If we did one we would likely do a short Disney one on special or something to try it out another time. I figure we will do a bunch of cruises when we are old so I would rather wait!

Morocco is great in April and surprisingly easy with kids. There are a lot of tour companies that do family tours in Morocco—if you do a search you can probably find the dates you want. Or go without a tour. DH had traveled there before so we felt comfortable organizing it ourselves and it was actually really easy.

$10k with or without flights? With is really difficult internationally.

Agree that Morocco - especially in spring - is a super choice. I also love Jordan as a family trip - so much to see and easy to get around - any time of year. Both excellent with kids.

Morocco is totally possible for 4 people under 10k. RT flights from DC in spring are about 1k each. You can stay at a nice riad in Marrakesh for about 300 a night. Everything is cheap—food, multiday trips to the mountains or to Fes, entry to gardens, guides. It’s really affordable. It’s probably my favorite trip we’ve taken.

I don’t know why I’m assuming we’re talking about spring— I guess because it’s what other people are asking about. I should say I would not go in the summer—the heat would be miserable.

Colombia! Can be done in a really affordable, comfortable way. Jungles, national park, mountains, waterfalls all accessible from Santa Marta, and Cartagena has great food, a lovely walled city, fun shops, street art, music, great vibes. Aside from the very top ones, hotels are pretty reasonably priced, but Airbnb works well too.
