Hi
A very long story, but we are interested in learning more about a non DC resident attending a public school in the district. I know nothing at all about DC public schools. I see that it is possible for a non-resident to attend a DC public school provided that after the lottery there is a spot in the school. Specifically, we are looking for a spot for a 10th grader. Does anyone have any experience with this? Any advice to give to set me straight and/or get me started? Is it not really possible to find a spot decent public high school because all the spots will be taken by DC residents? When I look on line to find schools (DCPS website) I cannot find any information on the charter schools. So, that is confusing, too. Thank you. P.S. I do realize there would be tuition I'd need to pay. That is well understood. |
So for those who are wondering it’s “only” $13,396 to do this. Outside of J-R, MacArthur, Walls, Banneker, maybe McKinley tech or Ellington (which has a lot of problems with residency fraud) I don’t know why you would unless you hated your kid for some reason. |
LOL WHAT?!
My advice would be NO. I truly cannot imagine anyone PAYING to attend any of the aforementioned DCPS high schools. If you aren't a troll and want input, you're definitely going to need to explain more about what you're looking for and why you cannot find it where you are if you're close enough to consider sending your child to HS in DC. |
Just rent a studio in bounds for the school you want for a couple of months and you will be all set. |
The answer is no. You won’t get a spot at the few schools I could imagine paying for out of pocket. |
Describe what you are looking for in a school. You can start with the charters here- https://dcpcsb.org/school-profiles. It's the equivalent of looking at private schools. I'd look at privates before I'd pay additional tuition for DCPS. |
This can’t be real. |
I call troll.
Why would you pay to go to DCPS? People are looking for a way out or not even going at all. |
This…isn’t a good idea. |
Is this like an exchange student situation? Family member coming to stay and wants to enroll in school? |
Yeah, this sounds like a very specific situation and maybe we need the details to advise. |
Agree. The only kids I’ve heard of paying tuition to attend DCPS HSs are students in late HS whose families moved and they wanted to finish HS with their friends. And even then, it was a challenge to get approval for this arrangement at a high-demand HS. My kids are at JR and are very happy, but I can’t fathom paying tuition for any public school if I didn’t have a connection/specific reason to attend. If this kid is going to live in MD or VA, they will almost certainly be happier going to school there. |
I know families who pay to attend Duke Ellington. 10th grade is a tough entry year, but not impossible. |
PG county high schools are pretty atrocious by and large. Is it really so hard to fathom why someone would want to do this? |
Yes, to above PPs.
I can see someone paying for Ellington since that is unique to the entire DMV. Also, know of PG families that work in the District sending kids to DCPS…admittedly, they don’t pay and some get busted. |
