Where do top students who got rejected early from Ivy/T10 land?

I am talking about applicants who have the academic stats (1500+, 4.0+, high rigor) but didn't make the cut. Unhooked. What typically happens to them?

Went to his safety, Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University, with substantial merit aid.

^ ranked #6 by US News in that discipline, if that matters to you.

I’m also curious where they WANT to land if Ivy+ was a no? Only another Ivy will do? In state option? Best school with most merit? Next highest rated school that did accept? Or next best school that closest matched the particulars of the ED/REA/SCEA/etc school? What is best case scenario?

DS wanted MIT or CMU, if not admitted to either of those, then UMD.

So, he's at UMD with merit, CS major, male, not URM.

They are doing fine. Has an internship this summer with a very well known tech company.

It's why ED II exists at highly selective schools. It's specifically there to get those extraordinary students who for whatever reason didn't get into MIT or Stanford in the first round. ED II is a very different thing than ED I. Schools like Duke, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, and Chicago are looking for the great students who got shut out of HYPSM in SCEA or ED. And really, no one else in the ED II round.

And as always, GPA and test scores aren't enough. Every T20 school can fill their classes ten time over with perfect grades and test scores. But the highly selective ED II schools want that second look at the gifted students.

I know a kid who wound up at Harvard after this. My kid got a deferral from an Ivy and wound up at a top 25. Admitted into number of top schools, merit aid, and honors colleges regular decision. Know of other kids who landed well with options. All worked really hard to write great essays which probably helped. None were legacy, athletes, or big donors.

Mine wanted to go to Brown or U of Chicago (though for money reason he did not apply ED anywhere). He ended up at Case Western and is happy.
