DC population surpasses 700,000 for the first time since 2019

Wondering what the DC haters will have to say about this. The District remains a dynamic, exciting and desirable place to live, despite what the racist suburbanites who frequent this board will tell you.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (7News) — The District’s population has exceeded 700,000 residents for the first time in five years, according to new U.S. Census Bureau data.

On Thursday, officials released new data showing that from July 2023 to July 2024, the city gained approximately 15,000 residents, bringing its population to 702,250.

This marks the District’s largest annual growth rate in nearly a decade, at 2%.

“People from across the nation and the world are choosing Washington, D.C. because of our vibrant communities, world-class schools, dynamic job market, and rich cultural opportunities,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser. “D.C. is a strong, well-run city, and people want to be here. We’re happy about that.”

I know two people who moved to the burbs during covid, but more required in-office time plus just generally realizing that they like the pace of the city made them move back. I think more RTO requirements will lead others to make similar moves.

You probably only know two people who did that because it would be disastrous financially to move to the burbs during COVID then back to DC. They paid inflated housing prices both ways

I guess they are renters so it’s probably a wash. But not a lot of people would do this because most people move for tangible reasons that meet specific needs, like more space for growing family, schools, etc. Most people - or at least most normal people - are not moving to mindlessly follow trends.

People who came in the 1750s were not immigrants. I don't follow this new trend thall all Americans over all time have been immigrants or descendants of immigrants. Also who says our country would have suffered if we had not had the periodic great waves of immigration? Maybe we would have been better off without some of them.

im sighing to myself to make this obvious point, but, enslaved people brought to the US were most definitely not immigrants. Black people in the US are the one exception to the 'we are all immigrants' point. it doesnt play to the nativists' point but its still an important point to make.
