QuestBridge kids taking half the spots at top schools, and it’s unfair

Anonymous
Since the Supreme Court ruling on admissions, now universities are looking at low to moderate income high achievers from QuestBridge to fill diversity slots. But what about minority kids who are high income? And everyone else? Are we all getting the shaft? My daughter is getting rejection after rejection even though she has high SAT scores and GPA. And I’m sure they chose a low income minority to fill that slot over us. The whole admissions game completely sucks. I’m tired of all these overkill programs leaning toward lower or moderate income. It needs to be a fair shot for all.

I am sorry, what school is 50% QB?

UVA has guaranteed admission with a 3.4 community college GPA

Are you serious? QB kids are great kids and they’re not stealing spots. Schools allocate spots to a degree - for athletes, legacies, and even for National Merit kids. It’s all based on their particular institutional priorities.

QB spots can be less than 100 at places like MIT. That’s nowhere near half!

Yes, deferrals and rejections suck but it’s just the reality of competitive admissions.

I hope your kid lands someplace where they’ll thrive.

Yep, over 600 commhnity college students get in that ways. And, to OP, no school is fikling half its class with QB. None

The only issue I have with Questbridge is that so many people cheat. There are a zillion ways to hide your income. Tiktok is full of Questbridge kids posting from their large suburban homes. My teens are very salty about it: "i know the cost of living is lower elsewhere but what the heck?"

People do all sorts of crazy sh$%t to hide money and qualify for Questbridge because it is worth $400K/kid!!! That is worth some financial gymnastics.

Plus lots of immigrant families with at least one college-educated parent.

I thought it was more like 300-400 but either way, CC students with 3.4s are coming in and your kid can be one of them, OP. Just get a 3.4.

What are you even talking about? You can find low income familes in an urban environment, a rural environment, and yes, even a suburban environment.

I think you said the quiet part out loud OP. Down with the poor minorities, up with the privileged whites.

Duke is among the schools that takes the most students via Questbridge. This year they took 113 through QB, out of 849 ED students. They'll probably accept about 2800 students total, based on last year's numbers. So that's 4% of acceptances. OP, your kid could be one of the remaining 96%, if qualified.

QB is so much money. I personally know people who got divorced to qualify, quit jobs to qualify, etc.
Reddit is full of posters who admit to all sorts of crazy stuff.

How can I hide my ex’s income? He is ruining it for our child, no intention to pay for college (I am the low income parent)
