We went to wedding this weekend where the main reading was “wives submit to your husbands”.
I fear for that bride. |
|
I fear for anyone stupid enough to take that literally. A solid marriage is an equal partnership, not split down the middle 50/50.
I like the idea of one partner is primarily responsible to bring home the bacon, while the other one’s primary responsibility is to manage the home. Neither one is better than the other. They both help and support each other. What’s not to like? |
| It should read: Men submit to your wives. Nope, not happening here. |
Be responsible adults. |
You completely misunderstand the scripture if that's what you think that verse means. The Bible clearly states that wives are to submit to their husbands' leadership. So, what he decides is the final say. He is also supposed to be the spiritual leader. Basically, women are second-class citizens and not equal partners. |
|
PP again. Here is the whole verse:
Ephesians 5:22-33 NKJV. Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. |
|
That's not a partnership that would suit me, and I hope my children also pick different models.
But the bride agreed to that, so I hope it works for her. |
| Was that all that was said, or did the preacher quote the rest of the text as all on what husbands should do? |
That’s good advice. It’s in the Bible and things work better in marriages where this is the case. No one respects lippy women. Know your place and be demure. |
| It wouldn't be my thing, but marriages to male feminist types who claim they are going to take an equal share can be just as abusive/miserable. Look at the relationships forum here. |
The Word of God. |
Excellent point. |
Fundamentalists take everything literally. Most of us, however, are more balanced with common sense. |
|
Did they also read Galatians 3:28 where it says “there is neither male nor female, for you all are one in Christ Jesus?”
Or the verse where slaves must submit to their masters, showing that these were reflecting the Greco-Roman values of the time? Also I’ve always found it strange to read Paul at a wedding, since he wanted people to be celibate, ideally. He thought Jesus’s return was so imminent that ppl shouldn’t make huge changes to their lives. |
This only works if you go back to the "good old days" where wives were fine essentially being treated like the help and you never left your husband over affairs, physical abuse, etc. Also, it's not easy to find a husband that brings in a ton of bacon that is looking for this kind of wife (who tends to not be college educated or ever had a real career to start). |
