2013G ECNL Teams

Anonymous
My DD is a 2013 on a DMV pre-ECNL team, so entering ECNL next year. The “ID Sessions starting earlier” thread reminded me that it’s probably time to start contacting coaches at other clubs. I’d love to hear what other 2013G parents at ECNL clubs think about their teams’ needs and plans heading into ECNL. Stacked and not taking any new players (McLean / Union)? Desperate for new talent (Arlington)? Just need to plug a couple holes (Loudoun / Alliance)? Not as good as they think they are (Bethesda)? I’m obviously making things up (although I did look at where the Rankings app has these teams)—what does the landscape really look like for these teams heading into this transition year?

All of these teams, except McLean, have added multiple players from outside the club in recent years. Hard to imagine that changing next year, unless some of McLean’s players follow their old coach to Alliance and there aren’t enough backfills available from Vienna and BRYC.

Current rankings of these teams means nothing because there will be a lot of player movement in the next year or two. Start with the team closest to you. If more than one are close enough, go with the coach with the best development track record. Actual development not rankings and talent id referrals. Attend as many practices as you can an see where your daughter fits.

How can you tell what actual development is?

Different players have different strengths. Different coaches have different preferences. How do you tell whether the coach’s preferences are aligned with a player’s strengths? For example, Bethesda has a reputation for high athleticism at the expense of skill, while McLean is the opposite, at least for this age group. As a parent, how do you determine whether these reputations deserved?

If you are not already associated with one of the ECNL primary feeder clubs then its going to be to tough. Very few of the girls are super elite at such a young age so it comes down to name recognition or knowing the coach. Across the board dirty inner politics. Our club a-lot of shady stuff behind the scenes

Vienna BYRC have almost no shot at Union. And Valor girls have almost no shot at NVA.

This thread is about 2013G. There may be plenty of Vienna girls on current Union teams, but it’s hard to imagine any will break into the 2013 squad given how dominant (locally) the 2013 McLean girls are. Unless of course politics force the Union U13 coach to take a player from the other feeder clubs.

Does NVA already form the 2013 team, I saw the team page on IG, full of LS girls, no valor.

Pretty much. They were fielding teams of 16-17 players for 9v9 games in the fall. Added a couple girls from GFR mid-year and seem to have their roster set. Only exception would be if some of those girls left after the Spring season.

Any chance McLean girls who played for DB for several years would look to play for him again at NVA? The current Loudoun team seemed to struggle in their last 6-7 games relative to what you’d expect, so I was thinking he’d be looking for opportunities to improve.

That is correct NVA recruits first from LS, they see which LS players can play up with u13 before even considering Valor players.

Anyone have insights on U13G coaches returning to coach U13 next year? I heard DB was hanging on by a thread at NVA. Maybe he stays due to McLean draw. Not sure about elsewhere.

SC has Bethesda U12 and U13. Seems likely he will keep the 2013s at U13 next year. That’s what happened this year with the 2012s.
