Amazing thread. My son is only a freshman, but I am reading this thread hoping to get a few tips. First I need to get my son to be more competitive. He is very bright, but lazy.

Congrats to everyone who got good news today!

DS is in at Tufts, GW and Carleton College! Now he has some hard choices to make.

Take UMD or CTech

Still waiting for UCB etc., otherwise still go to GT

Forget UCB go to GT

Any reason?

The unqualified admits are not in the engineering program. Cal, UCLA, UCD, UCSD etc all have difficult weeder classes in math, chemistry and physics. The remedial students fail and end up in majors far away from STEM.

Cal is excellent for engineering but honestly it’s better for neurodivergent, truly obsessed types, grinders and excellent cheaters. It’s very cut throat, and you have to watch out for sabotage. It can be too stressful and depressing for many kids.

I can't comment on the sabotage, but have heard from a few that a super bright kid who is not a grinder may not want to be @ Cal for engineering.

Lots of boys are slower to step it up, especially freshman year. Hang in there. He’ll get there!!
