| Do all the kids make a team JV/Varsity or do they cut? Do kids make the team but just sit the bench or do they do equal play time? Most skilled players play the whole time? Is it different at every school? Do the D1 commits play the most? What to expect in general? |
| Varies a ton from school to school. I doubt that most of the ISL A (lower division) schools cut (my kid's doesn't) or have D1 recruits more than once in blue moon. ISL AA (particularly the top) is far more competitive and I'd think that the coaches at all of these schools play their best players as much as possible. |

What year is your daughter? I doubt any schools would cut someone from jc as a freshman or sophomore. But if your daughter is a junior and is well below the varsity level they might tell her it’s not in anyone’s interests to keep playing.
Jv teams might do equal playing time but I can’t imagine any legitimate varsity team does |
| I’m not sure about DC area teams, but the IAAM teams definitely cut kids from JV, and some schools even have freshmen teams if the numbers are sufficient. I haven’t heard of any freshmen getting cut from the freshmen teams, but I have definitely heard of freshmen getting cut from JV. That said, if your daughter plays high level club ball (say top 30 or so team), I doubt that they won’t be able to make a JV team unless they absolutely bombed at tryouts. |
| And to answer your other questions, most top programs do not have an equal playing time rule, they play the best kids, particularly on varsity. As for the D1 players playing more, yes, they are D1 recruits, they are the best out there and will play the most. |
First question depends greatly on where your daughter goes. At larger, top tier programs of WCAC and ISL, especially at GC or Stone Ridge, there will certainly be cuts. With 55-75 girls looking to play lax, there isn't room. At the smaller co-ed privates, even if there is a good Varsity team, there are unlikely to be cuts for JV--just a numbers game. None of the top 10 programs play equal time, even at JV level. Top players, and certainly upper class commits will get the most time. DC-area privates play to win in the ISL AA and WCAC top 5-6. There will be some variances in the ISL A level and lower tier. Ask parents of upper class players about their experience. You should be able to get a good gauge. |

Lacrosse at the top 6 or so WCAC schools
GC, SJC, BI, PVI, AHC, and O'Connell all cut Girls from both JV and Varsity, and none of them are going to do equal play on either level they are looking to win. If your DD is new to the sport or just a below-average player who needs work she may only see the game time in blowout wins or losses. That being said I have seen very athletic girls pick up a stick one week for the first time and they just get it, and by the season's end, they are on varsity starting. So I would encourage you to have her try out regardless because you really just never know. |
Name 2 in the last 4 years. |
| I know for at least GC JV from experience, the coaches will take athletes that may be newer to lacrosse because they typically dominate most opponents so can get everyone in most games. But coaches are upfront about playing time when offering a spot and that for some drills in practice they be be off doing a separate drill since they may not be ready for some of the drills. |
did she play defense? was the varsity team not very good? you are definitely pointing out an exception rather than the norm. |
| I know that SR has struggled to have enough players to field a full JV team and has pulled up 8th graders at times just to have enough bodies. In other years, they have had girls pick up a stick and start playing (these girls, to my knowledge, have not gone on to play varsity, but they played JV for at least freshman, maybe sophomore year). |
A Varsity Starter in less than a season?!?! On top of academics and team practices everyday, this girl must have hit the wall a tremendous amount to have the stick skills to beat out other Varsity girls to start in such a short amount of time. |
She plays midfield just as a straight-up athlete she is also a 4 year varsity starter for basketball and plays AAU outside of school and is extremely bright looking to major in engineering. |
For what school? |
No she doesn't, no she didn't, maybe and no she isn't. Fairy tale. |
