Emory vs WashU for premed?

DC planning to apply ED2 but is torn between the two. Heard grade deflation at Wash U.

Don't go to pre-med heavy colleges as a premed. It is miserable, grossly competitive, and made to weed you out. Opt for places with good opportunities that aren't filled to the brim with your competition. It is very likely your DC will drop it from the exhaustion of being surrounded by premeds. This is witnessed very often at WashU and harms the culture. https://www.studlife.com/forum/2018/09/19/a-letter-to-pre-meds-calm-down.

100% agree. Pre meds are not fun to work with and places like Johns Hopkins are extremely toxic.

Great data! Note 3.7 at Emory is slightly BELOW average overall GPA.
In other words they do not have to be a top 25% student at Emory to get in to MD schools.

Why Emory over wash u?

Our family friend’s son went to wash U premed but ended up getting “weeded out.” Not sure how committed he was to pre med.

Emory’s pre-med cohort is sort of balanced out by the large cohort of business students. Not sure how the humanities departments between the two schools compare

I went to Wash. U. and knew plenty of premeds. I was never a premed, but I took and passed two STEM classes on the premed track before changing majors.

Emory is a wonderful university. I’m sure a student could have a good time, get great grades, and find great research and health-related volunteering activities at either school, or at comparable schools like Rice, Tufts, Case Western or the University of Rochester.

My experience was that the premeds at WUSTL were just ordinary students trying to do well in tough classes. The ones I knew were lovely, helpful people who seemed to party about as much as the other students.

Professors graded on a curve, but that helped everyone get a better grade than we would have gotten without the curve.

I’m sure there were a few cases of unpleasant premeds doing rotten, overly competitive things at Wash. U., but I don’t think the school or professors did anything to promote a harsh or overly competitive atmosphere. I never heard of any premeds being cutthroat.

I think that’s a Johns Hopkins problem. The Wash. U. premeds I knew weren’t toxic at all.

Yeah, and I'm sure a JHU parent would say the JHU premeds they knew weren't toxic at all. No one cares about your feelings.

My DC is at Emory and undecided. I was pleasantly surprised that the premed track was not super rigorous.
