DC planning to apply ED2 but is torn between the two. Heard grade deflation at Wash U.
I went to Wash. U. and knew plenty of premeds. I was never a premed, but I took and passed two STEM classes on the premed track before changing majors. Emory is a wonderful university. I’m sure a student could have a good time, get great grades, and find great research and health-related volunteering activities at either school, or at comparable schools like Rice, Tufts, Case Western or the University of Rochester. My experience was that the premeds at WUSTL were just ordinary students trying to do well in tough classes. The ones I knew were lovely, helpful people who seemed to party about as much as the other students. Professors graded on a curve, but that helped everyone get a better grade than we would have gotten without the curve. I’m sure there were a few cases of unpleasant premeds doing rotten, overly competitive things at Wash. U., but I don’t think the school or professors did anything to promote a harsh or overly competitive atmosphere. I never heard of any premeds being cutthroat.
