Our kids are all grown so schools are not a consideration. We'd love to live within walking distance of an area with shops and restaurants. We'd also prefer to stay under $600k for a single family house. We like the outdoors-especially hiking trails. Does anyone here have experience living in either area and have recommendations for specific neighborhoods? If you had to choose, which would you choose? Staying in this area (near DC) is not an option. Thank you! |
| Pensacola I guess. Memphis has a lot of crime problems, and at least in Florida I’d be close to the beach. |
| pensacola. |

Memphis, for having more culture and fewer hurricanes.
I hope there are better reasons (family?) for limiting yourselves to these two cities, because yikes |
| Memphis is a dump. I’d choose neither and move to Knoxville. |

Pens
Memphis is a dump and at least you can drive to nice beaches. |
| My family members (doctors/lawyers) live in a nice part of Memphis - east part of town and toward Germantown, their kids went to private schools, they live nice UMC lives. It seems ok in their area, but downtown isn’t great except for the Peabody. |
| OP, without giving away too much, can you tell us why it has to be one of these two cities? |
| pensacola |
| Memphis as I am terrified for hurricanes. |
| Unless you are fine with violent crime, Pensacola hands down. |

Born and raised in Memphis; family still there. Walkability + safety is limited to a few areas in downtown (Harbortown/Mud Island), Midtown, and Collierville (historic part).
If biking distance or short car ride is okay, your options expand quite a bit: all of Germantown, most of East Memphis, and the rest of Collierville. Hiking: Wolf River area, Shelby Farms, Meeman Shelby Park, TO Fuller State Park |

Memphis violent crimes are limited to certain areas that have struggled for generations.
The neighborhoods that I posted above (00:39) are better than anything I’ve seen in Pensacola. If Harbortown or Midtown aren’t your vibe (Memphis proper), limit your search to Shelby County or the City of Germantown. |
| My husband is from Pensacola. I’d love anywhere but there. I don’t know much about Memphis, but it has to be better. |
