Muhlenberg College

DD is adding Muhlenberg to her list and I’d love to hear from anyone with direct experience with the school. I’ve seen threads mentioning Muhlenberg as a good school for performing arts that gives nice merit. But I haven’t read actual experiences from former or current students. And not many people around these parts know much about the school. Anyone?

I’d be wary of all SLACs right now with the enrollment cliff approaching. Its female/male ratio is 70/30. School gives huge merit, which may be a sign it’s in trouble. And it doesn’t have the name recognition of other more highly ranked SLACs.

Muhlenberg is a niche school but a great choice for the right kid. Very artsy. It lacks the cachet of the top PA schools like Swarthmore and Bucknell, but if you look at its incoming student stats, it hangs with the likes of Dickinson and Gettysburg. I'm not sure why it can't catch a break in USNWR. Could be graduation rates, which might warrant further investigation.

while I understand this, I don't think Muhlenberg is in this kind of danger currently. It is a favorite of performing artists, that's for certain.

It is a very small, very quiet campus with little to do in the city of Allentown especially in its immediate surroundings.

If your kid is the type to just be happy with their ECs and not care much about the full "college" experience (sports, parties, etc.) it could be a good fit.

DD is quiet and into the arts and nature. Introverted with a few very close lifelong friends. Doesn't care much for sports or partying. She dances 20 hours a week and wants to continue in college.

There isn't much in the way of Arts in Allentown, but seems like the college may supply enough to satisfy that. Really, nothing in the way of nature.

Have you thought about Skidmore or Vassar?

There is, actually, lots of art in Allentown and the vicinity. Though a car would help access it. There are lots of local colleges with performing arts programs, city orchestra and bands, community theater, artsy movie theater, art museum. it’s relatively cheap and commutable to NYC so draws artists. Easton has a large artist community.

Muhlenberg’s campus is in the city but there are large parks nearby, and its not a long drive to Hawk Mountain, the Appalachian trail, and places to hike. The small ski mountain Bear Creek is not too far.

Op, it’s great for performing arts and for pre-med (and other pre-health). I grew up nearby and it’s a nice school, well regarded in the area. Gives good merit. My son liked it and got good merit by decided it felt a little small and wanted more town nearby.
