| My daughter is coming home for Thanksgiving and has requested steak for dinner one night. I have an electric range and oven and access to Safeway, Giant, and Sam’s Club. Can someone help tell me what to buy and how to cook it? We are a family of three. |

I find Josh Weissman annoying, but this video answers your question:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdHE2zgSaxU He chooses a ribeye, I'd probably get strips. |
| Go to Safeway (or better yet, Whole Foods--they have better meat) and get a flank steak. Make a marinade in a rectangular pan of equal parts dijon mustard, soy sauce, and olive or peanut oil. You want to coat the steak on both sides. Cover the pan with foil and let it marinate for at least an hour -- if you want to make in advance, put it in the fridge. Take it out and let it get to room temperature. I don't have a grill so I cook it under the broiler in the oven. Broil on high until one side looks cooked, the flip it over to the other side. Cut into the steak to see how cooked or raw it is inside -- keep checking until it's to your liking. Let the steak sit for 10 or 15 mins before eating. |
This looks so doable. Thank you!! |
Get a variety of steaks, Tbone, ribeye, chuck, sirloin, and buy a cheap grill for about $50 and a bag of charcoal and a bag of wood chips. Fire it up and throw on the wettened wood chips once the charcoal is burnt down for a few min, and throw on the steaks. Cook about 5 min a side and serve hot, or wrap in foil after cooking and keep in a warmer or oven. You could also broil them in the electric oven, on high, for about 5-8 min a side, just however you like them, rareish, med rare, etc. DON'T overcook though. |
But why? That's the cheapest worst cut of steak on an animal. Tough, gnarly, and even frowned upon in the old country and only used for cheap tacos. |
| I'd just take her out to a steakhouse. So much easier and you can count on the steak coming out perfectly. I wouldn't want to buy steak from any of the stores you mentioned. |
If she’s craving a traditional steak, please don’t get a flank steak. I like flank steak but it’s totally different from eating a filet or a rib eye. |
| I am truly curious – your family has never made steak before? |
I had the same thought. Would avoid flank. |
| Agree that she doesn’t want flank steak, which I love, but not when I want “steak.” I would take her to Ruth’s Chris. Otherwise, I would but a ribeye and watch videos of what to do. |
| I love flank steak, but I agree with others that it isn’t what someone is referring to when the say they want a steak. I agree that going out might be easiest, or if cooking at home is look for recipes for filet mignon or one of the Ina oven tenderloins. Ribeye and strip steaks etc. can be fatty and harder to cook properly if you’re unfamiliar. |

Go to whole foods and get a New York Strip. One steak is good for 2...maybe 3 people.
Salt and pepper on both sides. Sear each side to a golden brown in a fry pan. sear takes 3-5 min, depending on the heat. after a good sear, contining cooking at low temp for a grand total of 16-17 min in the pan. Take it our and let if rest under tinfoil for 10 minutes. Slice and drizzle resting juices over the steak. Bon Apetit. |

Some of these posts are crazy. You don’t need to buy a grill and wood chips just for this. TF. Nor do you need to use the broiler or oven. And it’s perfectly fine to purchase steak at whatever store you have access to.
Younger people are often thinking of filet when they want steak, so I’d go with that, or an NY strip if filet is too pricey. Filet isn’t as flavorful, but people like the tenderness. NY strip is my personal favorite. Don’t get flank. That’s best suited for tacos or stir-fries. Whatever you buy, take it out of the fridge a hour before cooking and salt it heavily on both sides with kosher salt. Dry it well with paper towels and wipe off some of the excess salt before cooking. Do not take it out of the fridge and put it in the pan while the steak is still ice cold. Use cast iron or stainless steel. I actually prefer steaks this way over grilled. I think the sear is the best this way. Otherwise, there are a million videos on YouTube with tips. I cook on both sides and then remove just under med rare, add butter, garlic and thyme to pan, return steak to pan and baste with the melted butter mixture, then rest again. |

The video link is that pan sear with butter basting so that’s my plan. Thank you to all who posted.
As for the question, no, I never cooked a steak. I did roasted filet one year for Christmas but that’s not what she wants. I’ll buy ribeye or strip depending on what looks good at the store when I go. We don’t eat a lot of red meat. |
