My teen is interested in starting to lift weights. This is not something he wants to do with his dad. We have weights and basic equipment at home. Ideally, he would follow a video with a 20-30 minute routine (arms, legs, etc). He is not a jock, and anything with too much of a "gym bro" vibe probably won't work. It's hard to wade through all the stuff on youtube. Would the Peloton app be better? Any other suggestions? I would be open to a subscription membership, also. |
Does the dad lift |
No, dad doesn’t lift |
Look up "Charles Atlas" courses from the 1930w. He starts them with bodyweight exercises that can be done at home and progresses them to weights and other training, along with health and hygiene suggestions for boys.
Has been the go-to course for preteens and beginners. |
Maybe check out Apple Fitness+? Strength is one of the workout categories; you can select the trainer, duration, and body part you want to exercise. It's pretty user friendly. You can also select weights as equipment to use for Core exercises.
I'm a mom who hasn't convinced my kids to try, so YMMV, but looks like you can get a free trial. |
We don’t have a Peloton bike, but we pay for the Peloton app. Go on Facebook and hoping the Hardcore on the Floor group. It gives you specific workouts and your teen can do as many or as few as he would like every day.
My athlete teen was a bit skeptical, but he was willing to try it for one month. Definitely saw a difference in his athleticism and strength. Most of the teachers do talk about form. He started when he was about 15. |
YouTube Starting Strength. Shows how to squat, deadlift, overhead press and bench.
There are also books |
If you can't get a full set of weights, there's a lot you can do with kettlebells. And I would rather do a free Caroline Girvan Iron or fitnessblender recorded workout than pay $13 per month for peloton. |
Lookup syatt fitness (https://www.syattfitness.com). he has an web based app with monthly workout including some with dumbbells only which i highly recommend for a teen. App also has videos with excellent explanations for all exercises.
I would also recommend having him work with a personal trainer to get basic moves down and gain some lifting knowledge before working out on his own. |
Get him a planet fitness membership and a couple of trainer sessions. He needs to learn proper form and should at that age should really only use machines unless he has someone to spot him on free weights. |
Check out the Sydney Cummings channel on YouTube. She typically puts out a daily 30-40 minutes workout using home gym equipment. Since COVID I have been doing the BeachBody and free YouTube videos and, IMO, Sydney is the best for a basic full body workout. She puts out so much content you never get bored. I'd suggest your son pick one of the programs (e.g., Hustle), start on Day 1, and follow along each day.
