Reapplying AAP for third grader this year

Anonymous
Last year, my child didn’t get into AAP, and I’d like to reapply this year. He is currently in 3rd grade. Besides the iReady and HOPE scores, what other test scores are used to determine eligibility? Does my child need to take the CogAT in 3rd grade? Thank you!

If they took the CogAt in 2nd you can ask for a one-time retake through the school system. Otherwise people pay for the WISC privately.

They'll include new iReady and new HOPE scores, your child's 2nd grade report card, and new work samples. You do not need to retake the CogAT. If you don't, they'll just use the score from 2nd grade.

When you're applying in 3rd or higher, the goal of your submissions should not be to prove that your kid is smart and would do well in AAP, but rather that your child's needs aren't being met in your child's gen ed classroom. By this point in the year, you should have some anecdotes about how your child is not receiving the extensions that they need, is not socially thriving, or whatever. If the kid is in the above grade level reading group, mention how infrequently your child even sees the teacher. If your school doesn't offer gen ed advanced math, but your kid is a math whiz, mention how your child needs access to advanced math and can only receive it in AAP. If your child is principal placed in a LLIV classroom, focus on how your child is thriving with the material and needs to continue with the AAP placement to have their needs met.

The best route would be for your child to score higher on the CogAt, because that would be a strong indication she actually belongs in AAP.

Otherwise, there’s nothing at all wrong with regular classes in FCPS.

What was your kids original cogat score?

You needed to ask for a CoGAT retake in September, the CoGAT has already been given this year.

His Cogat score is 130. NNAT 133. But low iready scores. I didn't know you can ask for CoGat retake. Is it too late now?

SOLs and iReady got my kid in for fifth. Cogats were mediocre, SOLs were at or near 600, iready was a few grades ahead.

Does he have low iready scores this year, or did he have them last year? The CogAT is probably okay enough if you can show that your child is above grade level in all subjects and if your kid gets a high HOPE score.

If the iready scores this year are low, try to figure out why. Low iready scores are a red flag that your kid would struggle with the AAP curriculum.

Seeing this alot - COGAT and NNAT not mattering all that much. If iReady is low, there isn't much chance.

What iready scores would you consider to be in the “low” range for AAP?

+1

Please do not push your kids into AAP if they’re Cogat, IReady, and HOPE scores all point to general education being the right place for your child.

You will only end up making your child miserable and frustrated if you push them into something they are not ready for (or do not want to do).

If the scores are 90th percentile and above in both math and reading, the HOPE is high, and the work samples are strong, I think your kid has a chance.

My kid has a little struggle in SOL even though she does assessments very well and iready is high . May I know what resources you are using for your kid for SOL prep.DD is really frustrated after the scores since she really works very hard but the scores doesn't reflect it I just want to support my kid at home. Please share your experience .Thanks in Advance.
