I need real help and ideas for getting my ravenous appetite in check

Anonymous
I’m not sure what in the world is going on with me. I am eating throughout the day. My willpower and basic reasonable thoughts about food, sweet and salty, have gone out the window. I wake up every morning vowing to do better, but I just don’t stop.

I’ve never been like this before. I’ve never had trouble managing a reasonable weight lately, I’m putting on weight for sure. I don’t weigh myself, but my clothes. Tell me everything I need to know. Any ideas or thoughts?

How's your blood sugar? When's the last time you got bloodwork?

I would start there.

eat more protein earlier and throughout the day, stay ahead of your hunger.

How old are you? Could you be pregnant?

I have had this habit and I gained a lot of weight from the excessive snacking. I tried a bunch of different ways to cut back, but I've had the most success by limiting the hours in which I eat during the day. (I have heard this called intermittent fasting but I don't think that's a true description.) I snack as much as I want between noon and 7pm. I try to avoid very high calorie foods but if I want some cookies, I will eat the cookies. At 7:00, I turn it off. No more calories. I can usually skip breakfast in the morning, too, but if I do find myself starving before noon, I will eat a small healthy meal. Using this approach, I have gradually lost about 1-2 pounds per month. I have been doing this for almost two years and I'm down about 25 pounds. (I gained some back during the holidays.)

Don't buy snacks or whatever you binge on. I can NOT handle having a bag of pretzels in my house and eating a few each day over two weeks. I'll eat 2/3 of the bag the first day I get them.

I always think about "is my stomach hungry or are my mouth/mind hungry?' If my stomach is hungry but it's not meal time, I'll eat some carrots, almonds, an apple, etc. If it's just my mind/mouth, I drink water.

Have set meals and only eat at those times. Absolutely no snacking in between. If you think you're hungry, drink water. Take a walk if you feel like snacking. Odds are you are bored and not really hungry.

Sounds like diabetes to me. You need to get some bloodwork done.

What are you eating? Maybe we can help you tweak the foods. Instead of one egg, eat 3. Instead of a small strawberry yogurt cup, eat 1.5 cups high protein plain chobani yogurt and add banana slices and a handful of walnuts to it.

Drink lots of water.

Commit to eating everything sitting down with a fork and knife and no screens in front of you. Eat slowly and chew thoroughly.

Thanks. These are all great ideas. I hope I can be disciplined enough to follow through.

It makes people anxious. People try to soothe anxiety with food.

Have your thyroid checked. When I had hyperthyroidism I could never stop eating.
