Being a woman and strength training?

Anonymous
I usually go to my work gym which is open 24.7 and all I see is men strength training never women. My recent blood test showed some muscle atrophy and I am concerned though I've known I had that for some time. I'm intimidated by the gym and working among big male muscle guys. Would I be judged? Feel like I'm judged by neighbors for doing all mostly man things like house repairs and lawn things because again I only see men doing these things

Oh and I'm a 5ft 2 115lb woman

Hire a trainer at the gym to show you around and introduce you to the machines. After a few sessions you should feel confident to do it on your own.

What kind of gym do you go to? I see women lifting weights all the time at my gym. I’ve been doing it forever.

Of course women lift weights! Maybe you need a new gym. Truly - women lift stuff. And especially those of us who do house repairs and landscaping need the strength! We put it to good use hauling lumber and bags of compost, right?

Don’t feel intimidated by the men. Get a personal trainer to teach you, then go do your thing.

This. At my gym there are plenty of women lifting heavy. In classes where there's a big array of heavier weights and on the floor.

Didn't you ever watch Mulan? It's time to make a man out of you!

That’s interesting, my work gym is primarily women doing lifting and men on the treadmills. Just do your thing and ignore everyone, I promise everyone is focused on themselves.

I go to onelife and the women all lift or do the circuit machines. Same thing at my previous gym, Golds. Weight training is so important as we age.

You could try working out at home with free weights. I do that and use the Peloton strength app. I have 10-20lb weights at home. You can get comfortable with those and then if you want to lift heavier, head to the gym then.

What blood test show muscle atrophy?

You can buy some weights for home and just watch videos. There are free ones on Youtube or you can get Apple fitness or Peloton. I pay $13/month for Peloton and I love it!

In my 40s and 5'0", and have been lifting for nearly 2 years now. Most people won't judge you for working out. Like another poster said, hire a personal trainer to teach you. I've also watched youtube videos on how to use the equipment, how to do the techniques properly, and develop a workout routine.
