Conclave starring Ralph Fiennes and a very strong cast is excellent (although the musical score was a bit jarring). This time I’m siding with critics over less enthusiastic audience reviews
Critics Consensus Carrying off papal pulp with immaculate execution and career-highlight work from Ralph Fiennes, Conclave is a godsend for audiences who crave intelligent entertainment https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/conclave |
I loved the ending! |
I read the book (same name) a few years ago and it was good too. I enjoyed the inter workings of the Vatican. |
Good to know. I'll try to catch it. |
Just saw it and loved it. I wrote down and will remember for a long time the line “ Faith and doubt walk hand in hand. Without doubt there is no mystery. And without mystery there can be no faith.” I’m an atheist. |
OP - me too - I laughed so hard … |
Saw it too - great film. |
OP - I loved Lawrence’s homily also. Although I am a practicing Christian, I truly agreed with him that certitude is the enemy of the good while having doubts are normal and healthy part of living the divine mystery. Certitude that any one of us has a monopoly on truth causes so many problems and divisions. So glad you enjoyed the movie also. |
Glad to hear you all liked it. I’ll watch it for sure! |
When I read the book I thought the twist was so hackneyed and unbelievable. Was it done well in the film? |
OP - Yes and earlier behavior made total sense in terms of that twist |
And this twist was not without historical precedent - although extremely unlikely … still enjoyed it. So much great acting - apart from RF - Isabella Rossellini, Stanley Tucci, Carlos Diehz, John Lithgow, Sergio Castelitto, Lucian Msamati, and the other cardinals were so convincing - to me anyway. |

OP - why the eye roll? I agree with PP that ending was great and unexpected … |
Don't spoil the ending here, thanks! |
