What universities stand out for DC hiring managers?

Anonymous
Open question. My kid wants to live in DC upon graduation, so I am curious if any colleges get an extra nod. Field is government, politics, policy, media etc.

Please state your industry and what universities, if any, make a positive impression.

Really? Do the kids from these schools still get an extra nod?!

I thought we were past that and all that hiring managers cared about is experience and skills. If I have a kid from Penn State or UMiami with great internships why would I not pick them over a mediocre Yale or Princeton kid?!?!

I really don't think it matters. Most of the people in my neighborhood who have good UMC gov con jobs went to VA Tech or Penn State. I am completely serious.

GWU, American, Catholic Univ, gives you great chances of securing a gov't internship.

Does UMD also confer that same advantage?

I have noticed DMV area giving special recognition to TJ grads applying in the area (our friend's daughter graduated TJ and then VT and got a job due to TJ being on the resume according to the grad) since it is well known in the area but for colleges, GT, GW & UMD locally.

It really does not matter. I am in a senior Fed gov position; been on the Hill etc. The smartest and most capable (and successful) person I’ve encountered had an unremarkable educational background (not bad, third tier undergrad, low ranked law school), but she is universally considered amazing and had a meteoric rise where I work. In general, I have seen little correlation between job success in my gov/policy work and educational prestige.

I would think so. I would think most well regarded local universities stand out.

Hiring manager in private sector. School doesn’t matter like it used to. At all. People need to understand that when they are thinking of spending 400k on undergrad

If you want to be a contractor, the biggest leg up is a service academy followed by just being an officer with a clearance followed by anywhere with a clearance

Maybe in your world. But outside of that, it still matters a lot
