Here’s my guess as to how it shakes out among the private schools. (I don’t know the rosters of the public schools we’ll even to include)
1. Gonzaga 2. Sidwell 3. Paul VI 4. Bullis 5. Bishop O’Connell 6. St. John’s 7. DeMatha 8. St. Andrew’s 9. Georgetown Prep 10. Bishop McNamara HM: Maret, Ireton Not including schools like Oak Hill or Baltimore schools. Just DMV privates. |
I’d go same 10, but a different order: 1. Gonzaga 2. Bullis 3. Paul VI 4. Sidwell 5. SJC 6. O’Connell 7. DeMatha 8. Prep 9. SAES 10. McNamara WCAC is 6 deep and Ireton might have something to say about 7. Should be a great league to watch once again. IAC is really top heavy with Bullis and Prep. STA has a couple of nice players though. In the MAC, Sidwell definitely the deepest and best roster. SAES has depth questions but some really good players. Maret is too young this year some good players on the roster. |
| Good Counsel will be in the conversation for the top 10. Mt Zion probably top 5 |
| Why is Bullis ranked so high after graduating so many players? I know the center is back, and that is huge, but what reloading did they do? |
| SJC just beat the #1 ranked team in the country by 19 points. So there’s that. |
Jackson-Reed beat Bullis. So there's that. |

Caught the GP v Landon JV game. When did playing non-starters at the JV level become such a thing? GP has 4 varsity players starting on JV. They have 14 players dressed. Honestly, what's the point? Have fewer on varsity because they aren't getting in except for blowouts against backups anyway. Or on the other side, what's the point in 30+ point wins against bc of the disparity. There's a lot of kids who'd like to get those minutes. It used to be players were no longer eligible if they played at the varsity level.
Honest question. |

Most of my son's teammates (on well known AAU team) are planning to apply at IAC/MAC schools next year and/or attempt to be "recruited." What's the point of attending these schools (for basketball vs academics) to be bench riders? There is a LOT of talent in the DMV and fierce competition to make AAU and school teams. (We can't afford to spend $50k+/year for tuition with no guarantee of playing time at JV or V levels!) |
| You have to do your homework and figure out where you are in the pecking order before committing. In general, if you are not realistically going to start or in the 7 man varsity rotation you have to be very careful. The team will just recruit over the top of you the next year when you think it will be your turn. |
| Finding a good matchup for playing time in the IAC and MAC is tough unless you are a higher level D1 player. Some schools are definitely thinner than other in terms of talent. |
If your son's teammates aren't being pursued by IAC/MAC schools then you should probably adjust their goals downward. Almost every single school uses their diversity card and aggressively pursues players all the way to senior year. Even if your kids are pretty good, they will find themselves behind the scholarship poc. Once a school has decided to admit a scholarship player, that player plays. There are a few examples every year where a scholarship player flushes out due to grades or other issues like the distance to school. I think one of the few players to rise above is a player at Sidwell. Of course, he's 6'5" and about 220 lbs and a real player. All you have to do is look at the standings. The top schools recruit and give scholarships and the bottom ones don't. Btw, if you are a poc and have money and your kid is any good at all, he is admitted. Diverse and $$ opens doors. |

adding on to the original thread subject.
The recruited, scholarship player also leads to more and more players "floating" between varsity and jv rosters. In order to mollify those families, a player "makes" varsity and is then given actual playing time on jv. This reduces the number of players in the program and player interest amongst playing kids in the school. I'm having a hard time figuring out the overall benefit for a school unless they are the #1 team in the area or their conference. |

What’s up with Sidwell boys basketball this year? Is a rebuild year after a lot of graduations?
