DC High School Hoops

It’s a combination of some injury back luck and lack of depth. Also a few local teams like SJC are just a lot better than some projected. WCAC dominance asserting itself.

You mean the paid entertainers of DC's elite aren't as good this year? It's an embarrassment to a school of Sidwell's stature that this is the way they've chosen to pump their diversity numbers.

Do they mostly recruit from takeover? I noticed takeover tryouts were held at Sidwell.

Yes. Will happen at Gonzaga next year too. They don’t have much outside of the talented starting 5 seniors on Varsity and even less from the predominantly sophmore JV team, which is losing badly this year in conference play.

Yeah, Gonzaga will need to pull off some recruiting wins to avoid stumbling badly next season.

Still, this year’s team is one of the all-time greats in DC HS history, so a rebuilding year or two is probably in order.

lol. Gonzaga has kids getting cut who would be starters as freshman on most varsity teams in the area. Every year, families enroll their kids at GZ thinking they will be high level d1. They quickly run back to public school when the kid gets cut or is buried on the freshman bench.

Is it your impressions that this the case even for kids who got recruited for basketball?

Yes, and it's not only Gonzaga. Year after year, schools take advantage of unrealistic expectation parents to get them to enroll in schools. They quickly find out either their kid isn't nearly as good as they thought, or the school has given scholarships to other kids. Scholarship kids play first regardless of skill. If the scholarship player turns out to be a problem (hello Bullis) either on or off the court, that is the only way to move up after enrollment. The schools know once that tuition is paid, it's highly unlikely a family will transfer out. It is planned and not an accident.

Exaggeration. Gonzaga freshman and JV teams aren’t that competitive.

Most of my son's teammates (on well known AAU team) are planning to apply at IAC/MAC schools next year and/or attempt to be "recruited." What's the point of attending these schools (for basketball vs academics) to be bench riders? There is a LOT of talent in the DMV and fierce competition to make AAU and school teams.

(We can't afford to spend $50k+/year for tuition with no guarantee of playing time at JV or V levels!)

My son is at one of the top MAC schools and he wasn’t recruited, but he’s one of the better players. They don’t recruit as much as is being insinuated above.

Two senior D-1 starters injured and out for the year and despite that, still won the MAC and will play the 'zags for the DCSAA championship.

Only one of them is out. The Kentucky commit is playing and the GW commit is in uniform, but hasnt been playing.

This is a joke, right? Take a look at these school's team photos, their tuition and their enrollment demographics and tell me they don't recruit and give scholarships. Swap the uniforms and it's just about every good hoops team in the league. https://www.instagram.com/potomachighschoolbasketball/?hl=en
