Hybla Valley Elementary School

Anonymous
My husband and I were considering purchasing a home in Groveton, but this elementary school looks awful from what I’ve read. We do not have children yet but plan to shortly and will likely be in this home for ten years or so. Does anyone have firsthand experience with this school or pyramid?

Additionally, aside from private, are there any alternate public schools available?

TIA!

Assuming that you aren't a troll, don't buy there unless you can afford private

Sorry, truly not trolling. Just an uneducated non parent. Thanks for the response.

If you are zoned to Hybla Valley, that's your ES option. It is one of the poorest (about 79% low-income) and most heavily Hispanic (about 84%) elementary schools in the county. About 2/3 of the kids are in ESOL programs. The administration and staff may do a fantastic job to help the kids there, but the general assumption is that the focus by necessity is primarily on the lower-income, Hispanic population. The White/Asian enrollment combined is only about 6%.

A lot of people in that area send their kids to Catholic school at St. Louis or Bishop Ireton for HS.

The only alternative public solution is K-2 at Hybla Valley, test prep your kid within an inch of their life so you get into full time AAP at the center at Stratford Landing for 3-6, and then on to Sandburg and West Potomac which are the MS and HS for both Hybla Valley and Stratford Landing.

We lived in that area before we bought our house. There's a good bit of crime in that part of Alexandria. Everyone thought it would be an up and coming neighborhood, but it just never made it. I would not raise a child in that area even if private school was an option.

Wow! Thanks, this is such a bummer since we love the house.

Hybla is zoned for the govt housing projects on route 1, giving it a very transient population, as well as a pretty rough crowd. I'd avoid Woodlawn, too, and the middle and high schools aren't great, but for elementary schools Waples Mill and Hollin Meadows are nearby and pretty nice.

We lived in the area with our previous home but were zoned for Groveton ES, which is right down the road. Agree with others regarding looking at the stats for Hybla Valley and the crime in the area. Our section of the neighborhood was fine, but right outside that neighborhood, there was a lot of crime and other incidents. We had kids and moved to Burke several years ago- night and day difference.

Waples Mill is not nearby.

Hollin meadows and mount eagle are actually completely fine. Once you get through elementary then MS and HS are fine. If you want private, there are a few local options that are good and reasonable including Browne, St. Louis, Montessori

I would never buy there. Some of the houses that way are nice but anything east of Rt. 1 is a no. A lot of the crime is due to proximity to the stores on Rt. 1. It also looks run down during the day but definitely worse at night. HV elementary is a hard no.

The good news is there are plans for a wall and check points along Rte 1.

Not true. You can also apply for the lottery to Fort Hunt (West Potomac pyramid) Spanish immersion in 1st grade. I've also known a couple of people who have gone to Rose Hill (Edison pyramid) starting in K for Spanish immersion - but I'm not as familiar with that option. Rose Hill is probably a closer drive from Hybla Valley than Ft. Hunt.

Everyone I know who lives within the Hyble Valley boundaries have sent their children to St. Louis or Aquinas Montessori School (which is right next door to Mount Vernon High School.)
