Airbnb problem

Anonymous
We’re headed to Aruba on Monday and the host just contacted me to say that the AC is broken. The part is on order and she’s trying to find a place for us until it’s repaired. I get it.

But she proposing a 2 bedroom a block off the ocean. I don’t have a problem with the location (even though I had booked ocean view) but I would never put us in a two bedroom. We have two adults, two teens, and my mom. With all the money and the travel, I’m not hip on anyone sleeping on a couch.

I get that A/Cs break but I’m annoyed at the two bedrooms. She’s trying to find us another place with three bedrooms now.

Thoughts?

The place you originally booked doesn't exist, OP.

This is a very normal AirBnB scam. You book one place and then just before you leave, it isn't available and they offer to put you up in a much worse place. AirBnB will give you your money back in these cases and then you can find your own place. This has unfortunately become a big issue on these platforms.

It is October - stay in the place without the AC.

Ask if she can get a portable unit in the place you booked until the part comes in.

Call the bluff.

It is off season - you should be able to find something - and possibly cheaper since it is last minute.

OP here. Hmmm…I don’t get the impression that it’s a scam. I own rentals and the A/C has broken and we’ve been in a rental and the A/C has broken while we’re there and we had to leave early.

Aruba is too hot year round for open windows. But I will suggest portable AC.

You’ve clearly never been to the Caribbean

Can you cancel? Just find another place yourself. I wouldn’t wait for the host to find something for you.

There are lots still available on Airbnb. https://www.airbnb.com/slink/ieMgfq65

It's Aruba. There are hotels.
Cancel thru Air BnB because cannot deliver what was promised. Claw back via cc if necessary. No mercy.

It’s the combination of it being broken right before you even arrive AND the part is on order. Like you said EVERYONE has AC in Aruba, they have a huge AC market. Supplies should be plentiful.

You’ve obviously never lived on an island. This is normal.

There are tons of places available on VRBO.

No way would I stay at the less than ideal place. Secure something else.
