Can't be any doubt with a conviction! Guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Juries are ridiculously lenient with drivers who kill pedestrians and cyclists, as long as the driver was not DUI. Juries sympathize a lot with drivers "who made a mistake" because they can envision themselves making the same mistake. It's an issue.

"Victims' family members burst into tears Wednesday as the verdict came down, while Shahid showed little emotion.
“I feel like I can finally breathe again. We are beginning to get justice,” the mother of one victim told News4 partner Telemundo 44 in Spanish.
The judge ordered Shahid to be jailed immediately, over his attorney’s objections."

From the victim who survived:

The girl later turned and spoke directly to Shahid, telling him: “You, Usman Shadid, went 81 miles per hour. You did not hit the brakes. You chose to be irresponsible. You took two lives. You hurt me forever along with so many in this courtroom."

“Because of you, we will remain in unending pain for the rest of our lives," she told him.

The legislature ought to make the sentence range 3-10 years rather than 1-10. Light sentences like this are the reason why plea deals seem so soft. The CA will have a tough time getting defendants to agree to more than 2 if they don't think they'll fare any worse before a jury.

Alternatively, VA could join most states and put sentencing in the hands of the judge.

BINGO!!!! These are my thoughts exactly! Usman mentioned during his sentencing statement that his sister who is attending Oakton HS has been bullied for his actions. I mean not that I condone bullying but these are consequences of his reckless actions! At least she is alive, the other 2 aren't! The surviving victim also attends Oakton so I can see it creating an uncomfortable situation for both. Things that Usman could have avoided!!!

Neither of these people are involved. They should be able to attend without bullying.

DP, yeah that’s the point, but they can’t because of his selfish and reckless actions.

Atty here. I told y'all quite awhile ago that he would get 2-3 years for each count.

That's how our system works. The jury saw Shahid as a stupid young man who has potential, so they gave him some jail -- but short enough that he could see the end and turn his life into something better. I'm not saying it's ideal. Nothing will bring the girls back.

He is a convicted felon. I hope he gets beyond seeing himself as the victim, and that he takes some genuine responsibility. The fact, that the civil case will be on-going for probably the next year will not help Shahid's mindset for taking responsibility. As long as he is prepping for the civil case, he'll be fed the line that it wasn't his fault by his legal team and probably his parents. That will keep him from really looking at what he's done, and growing from that. But, one can hope.

But in your first example, the driver WAS driving under the influence. She had consumed the equivalent of 13 shot glasses of hard liquor. I know the case, and she only served three years. You would think that someone who was so impaired by alcohol and killed two people would’ve gotten more than three years.

She was our family’s treasure, sunshine.
The sweet memories of her are our strength to live now.
We are relieved she is with the Lord now,
we will meet her soon over there.

One of the girls is the survivor whom he also crashed into . She certainly is involved but she is not the one who claimed to be bullied.

This is a very grave situation.
It’s unimaginable to be driving 81 on a street Where limit is 35.
You can’t try to shift blame.
This is outrageous. Complete disregard for any life.
This is crazy

Wouldn't this have been a school zone, making it 25 mph limit?

No. Bullying is bullying. No one should be bullying her. She’s not her brother.
