That’s rich coming from a school that has stubbornly remained independent. Why doesn’t ND just join the B1G and have Stanford and Berkeley sign on as well? Perhaps ND should be abandoned by all other top football schools since they want to remain on the outside of conference affiliation. Here’s another indictment of college athletics: It allows ND to remain independent without repercussions. |
ND wants to join the playoff party at the end of the year without the pressure of competing for conference titles. With super sized conferences in the making, they might just be left out of the mix in the future. Imagine what would happen to ND if that occurred? |
ND wants the NBC paycheck and the guarantee that all of their games will be on a national broadcast. If they go to the Big10 and end up playing Maryland at the same time Ohio State is playing Wisconsin, then they will be hard to find on tv |
| B1G should sign on Stanford at 50% revenue share (below what Oregon and Wash got), and leave room for ND down the line if they change mind |
(OP here) Stanford really needs to determine whether or not it wants to remain among the D-1 Power Conferences. If yes, then Stanford should call the Big Ten Conference with its best offer. Almost certain that the Big Ten Conference will be a no at 50% for the remainder of the current contract which runs through 2030. For serious consideration, think in terms of $20 million to $25 million for the remaining 6 years of the current media contract. $20 million is much better than $4 million per year in the Mountain West Conference (MWC). I do not really have a reasonable recommendation for Cal. Maybe ask for a 25% to 33.3% share for the remaining 6 years ? What other alternative does UCal-Berkeley have ? |
|
Maybe there will be a little more hope for Stanford joining the Big Ten if FSU does not give notice that it intends to leave the ACC by the deadline of August 15, 2023--just 5 days from today. Of course, if Stanford gets invited to join the Big Ten Conference, it will probably be at a payout rate below 40%.
If Stanford wants a high probability of getting to yes with the Big Ten Conference, then think in terms of a payout percentage of 25% to 33%. |
|
How will NIL (name, image, likeness) contract payments affect football programs at schools like Stanford & Cal ?
College football is primarily about recruiting and recruiting the very top high school prospects is, in large part, about NIL money. Stanford has very wealthy supporters. Stanford may be able to buy its way into a Power 4 Conference by accepting a reduced payout and Stanford boosters can buy top prospects for football under NIL. |
That big independent NBC contract might be coming to an end. The Big Ten also has a big NBC contract that will go into affect with the B1G starting in a couple of weeks. We will see…. |
Other way around. Maryland has higher CFB viewership than Wisconsin. https://medium.com/run-it-back-with-zach/which-college-football-programs-were-the-most-watched-in-2022-94eca4f6acbd |
(And higher SAT scores …). |

College Football Season begins:
August 26 with Hawaii at Vanderbilt; August 26: Navy versus Notre Dame in Dublin, Ireland; The big game is: September 23rd: Ohio State at Notre Dame. I wonder if NBC will delay contract negotiations with Notre Dame until after September 23rd. |
Normalize the data for opponent or it’s worthless |
What an absolutely tone deaf, hypocritical tool. This is an indictment of college athletics! Also, please NBC, give us 70M/year so we don’t have to join a conference. Isn’t “abandoned” just another word for independent, Jack? Buffoon. |
| Pete Bevacqua, who will become the Notre Dame AD early next year, was most recently the Chair of NBC Sports. I wouldn't be shocked if they figure out an attractive deal there! |
Swarbrick is the figure who has been most adamant that ND will never join a conference. A lot of people speculate that after he retires, they will finally cave and join the Big10 |
