Which T25 (or so) or T10 SLACs are the most social, fun or extroverted?
Please post your thoughts. |
It depends entirely on who your child is and what they are interested in.
If your child really wants a conventional party school, you will have to look at the large public’s in the T25 such as University of Wisconsin Madison or the University of Michigan. UVA as well. But if you are not looking for the classical party-scene school, look at what makes the kid happy socially. Kid who wants to connect with others outdoors and enjoy being in nature? pick Stanford or UCBerkely or UVa. Intellectual kid who loves to talk about ideas and smaller gatherings? Then MIT or UChicago might be perfect. Any of the top SLACs will have a good sense of community. |
What's your definition of "fun"? Of the top schools, Dartmouth has a reputation for more drinking and Duke has a more active Greek life -- but that's only fun for some people. |
Brown—the fun Ivy. |
UCLA |
I have a recent graduate of the top school that conventional wisdom has declared FUN (Vanderbilt). This kid has a close friend attending the School Where Fun Goes to Die (Chicago) during the same years.
My kid, during many trips to stay with his friend on campus, found Chicago much more social, genuinely engaging and collaborative than Vanderbilt. People actually looked up from their phones and engaged and talked to each other and formed new clubs. If however an elaborate tailgate scene is what you're actually asking, then yes, Vandy does well in that regard |

Dartmouth, Penn, Vandy, and Duke. Slacs are generally not known for their social scene, but are known for being happy places for introverts.
Behind top 20/t10, Michigan, ND, UVA, Wake, WandL, Richmond, UCLA, BC. |
It depends on the kid. My kid went to Hopkins and party hard, as did his friend group. They all graduated.
Would I recommend to most folks that's a good idea, not really. However it really will depend on your kid and their friend group. |
I went to Hopkins and had a similar experience, but I wouldn’t say it’s a party school. There is a lot fewer extroverted social kids at Hopkins than at Vandy. |
My kids is like this/wants a fun, social, out 3+x a week vibe. ED to Vanderbilt. |
Yes and no. Yes -- creative and out of the box, in that sense fun. But not slack fun. Intense kids with rigorous classes, but just more of a creative/communal vibe than similar schools. |
What schools are like Duke and northwestern in the 1990s? |
Great question. We’ve been asking the same lately. So far, we keep hearing Wake and BC. What else? We thought maybe Vanderbilt, but apparently it’s harder to get into now than Duke/Northwestern were in the 90s. ![]() |
Caltech had a surprisingly intense "work hard, party hard" mantra. Of course the work was a massive crush, but weekends were a time to go crazy. It's odd housing system encourages intense social activity to go with the intense academics. |
