swim practice during school year?

Anonymous
DD is in 5th grade and joined swim team last summer in our community. We loved it and more importantly she loved it. She learned all of the strokes and made fast friends. I see that there are learn to swim schools such as Goldfish, British swim but is there a program we can enroll her in to keep up her swim skills up during the school year? What do other parents do?

Swim Team. Where do you live?

Yes, there many lesson programs like FINS and Rising Stars where she can get in the pool for an hour once a week. And then there are competitive teams like NCAP, ASA, RMSC, machine, etc. where she would practice 2-4 times a week and have a meet once a month or so. Those teams are already formed a practicing, and many are tough to make, so it’s probably too late for this year. Tryouts are generally May through July.

She likely would feel out of place at a goldfish-type place. Those cater to younger kids. In Fairfax county, the rec centers offer once a week stroke mechanics classes that are pretty good. I'm sure MoCo/DC/Loudoun etc have something similar.

Where do you live? The club teams have mostly formed, but there are other options (rec center lessons, stroke center mechanics). St James has a rec swim team that is broken up to fall/winter/spring sessions. Swim Farm is also a good option. Some summer swim teams have a winter swim program, have you checked to see if yours offers anything (it’s usually once a week).

MoCo used to have KSAC, it's closed. RSFC doesn't offer stroke and turn clinics. They have 8 week courses, but they are kind of difficult to register for they fill up within minutes of opening. Olney might have a clinic. Also likely booked by this point in the season.

People say it's all fine with KSAC closing all of MoCo can just use RSFC, but it isn't.

Our summer league team has a once weekly winter swim option for kids who don’t swim club. Maybe your team does too, or maybe it partners with another pool to do it?

KSAC was just one center and a new one just opened in downtown Silver Spring so some of the displaced capacity shifted there for now. There are also the existing other centers in Germantown, Olney, and MLK(also in Silver Spring off New Hampshire). There are options at the Y in Bethesda and Silver Spring and programs at private locations like Prep, SR, HA, etc.

Here are a few options:

Doesn't your summer team run a weekly winter program?

Ask them.

The splashaquatic link doesn't work. RSFC doesn't offer stroke and turn clinics.

Try SwiMontgomery through Montgomery County Recreation. It is 2x/week, so DD will make much more progress than if she just does Stroke and Turn or a once-weekly summer team refresher. (Our summer team, which is a pretty good one, does not do anything during the winter.) If DD continues to love it and excel, make sure to schedule tryouts with a year-round club early in the summertime of 2025.

Youth 7 or Swim Team Prep would likely be a good fit at RSFC for them or a child of similar ability:

Not op but many of them don't. Ours doesn't. Maybe that's why we're in a low division

It really would help to know what area!

Seriously, OP posted this question twice and has never answered the question of where they live. All of the suggestions are dependent on where they live.
