Giving up Smartphone

Anonymous
Looking for experiences with the various stripped down phone options that are available. I’m looking for something that allows texts, Google maps, calls, emails, but not full apps/internet. Does such a thing exist? Any recommendations?

I don’t know if there’s anything dumb that can do maps, definitely not without internet. Seems unlikely but someone else might know otherwise.

Gabb phones can do maps with no social media.

Why?

A part of me wonders if Steve Jobs released the iPhone as vengeance on the world for his early and painful death…

Why not work on yourself and your issues related to your phone?

1000% agree.

Less is more in everything.

I live on a busy street and see the high school walking to school. They are all looking down at their phones. Maybe new humans will be born with bent necks.

If someone was an alcoholic would you suggest they work on themself and the issues related to alcohol while continuing to drink and keep alcohol in their home.

https://www.reddit.com/r/dumbphones/

The phones people post have varying levels of functionality. There are also apps that will turn a smartphone into a dumb phone. Like you most people still want text and email but not social media. But sometimes people need other apps for practical reasons (my work requires me to have an authenticator app on my phone to log in to my work software for instance) so sometimes turning a smart phone dumb is easier because it allows you to get rid of the time suck apps while retaining stuff that is just practical but doesn't encourage smartphone addiction.

And I was surprised when I started reading this subreddit that there are quite a few companies basically manufacturing and selling "dumb phones" explicitly for this purpose and there is even a subculture with its own aesthetics for people who want this. Like one thing people talk about on the forum is the idea that colorful graphics contribute to phone addiction so you'll see a lot of the phones have grayscale interfaces or apps that turn the phone grayscale which is interesting -- I had not thought about this until reading about it but I do think a black and white interface makes the phone less engaging and thus less addictive.

Anyway: welcome to the movement.

I use my phone for taking photos, calling my mom, facetiming my siblings and college kid, and texting. Half the time I don't know where it is, so I have a watch that helps me find it. Oh, and using merlin to ID birds.

I feel old.

The most important thing that you are missing from your post is the why. That may help with suggestions. You can restrict apps. Perhaps a google watch is what you are looking for? It is really hard to tell when you did not explain. For a child or adult?

My name is Larla and I am a smartphone addict. Where do I sign up for this smartphone-less phone? And how will I get National's tickets if I don't have a smartphone?
