It is September, what are you reading?

As mentioned on a couple of other threads, I'm reading Eve, by Cat Bohannon, which is about "How the female body drove 100 million years of human evolution." It's a fascinating read about how we became human, through what I would consider a feminist lens.

After that, I'll be on to James: A Novel, by Percival Everett. I'm late to the party with that, but looking forward to it.

I loved the start of Eve, but ended up tiring of it by the end. There was lots of interesting info, but I didn't like the tone. I thought she tried to make it too "fun" and lost some of the scholarliness that should could have kept. And the section on love didn't work for me at all.

I did, however, love James, which I just finished.

Now I'm reading The Fortunes of the Rougons, the first book in Emile Zola's 20 book Rougon-Macquart series. I've read about 6 of them in no particular order and they have all been favorites, so I figure I better start at the beginning and read the whole series.

I very much agree with this assessment. The tone is off -- distractingly casual and familiar and she doesn't have the voice to pull it off at all. Haven't read the "love" chapter yet.

I just started re-reading Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie series. She has a new one out and it's been years since I've read them. Can't wait to be back with Jackson and Julia and all the amazing charaters!

I'm about to finish up The Northern Clemency. Next up is "An Unfinished Love Story" by Doris Kearns Goodwin.

It's wonderful. But my fave Ishiguro is Never Let Me Go. I'm a big lover of sci-fi.

I just read The Goldfinch. Looking forward to reading Gilead when I finally come off the waitlist, in at least 6 weeks… In the meantime, I’ve just started Behind the Beautiful Forevers.
