Were you ever investigated by CPS?

Have you ever been investigated by CPS or do you know someone who was? What was it for? What did they do or say?

Why are you asking?

I was abused as a kid and begged my teachers and school counselor for help. If they reported it to CPS, nothing ever came of it.

I am sorry that happened to you.

No. I’d think it takes A LOT for someone to be investigated.

No. And we are a high risk family for this, because we have a child with profound special needs. She has zero ability to communicate — verbal or nonverbal. Sometimes, she has bruises, etc and we really don’t know why. Parents in our situation are way more likely to be reported because the kid cannot speak up for themselves.

That said, we are rich and white. So we are way less likely to be reported. The other factor in our favor is that we have been with the same doctors for years and years. They knew us before her diagnosis or were part of the team that did the diagnosis. They know us very well and can see how hard we work to keep her healthy and happy.

That's not true. Some are screened out immediately.

My mother was. I have no idea why, but there could have been many reasons—I was both abused and neglected. I deflected completely when interviewed. Ultimately no one did anything to help me.

It depends on the kind of abuse. Physical that leaves marks, yes, they should have reported it, but generally emotional abuse gets ignored.

Same. They came out more than once too. I remember once my mom stood behind the interviewer and mouthed hateful scary things at me, and I was terrified to say anything bad. And another time when the police stopped us on the street because people waved him down because she was dragging me through the road by my hair and beating me in public. Nothing came of that either. Oh the ways adults fail the neediest kids.

My friend was. She was neglectful and verbally and emotionally abusive. But CPS was called because she cursed out a kid while with her kid at a cafe a block from the kid's school, and the person thought my friend was cursing out her own kid.

CPS was also called a couple times because of how filthy her home was (friend is a hoarder). So maybe three times CPS visited her home?
