Exercise Breaks

Anonymous
Other than rest days which I do take, I have not taken a full break from exercise in a few years. I'm an average person, not a body builder or athlete - I just like to work out for mental and physical health.

I typically do some type of exercise on vacation, but on our next trip I plan to travel lighter and not take workout clothes and shoes or deal with sweaty clothes in my small bag and have not checked for fitness facilities, etc. We'll be gone for two weeks, and I haven't taken a break this long since a surgery many years ago.

On one hand I'm looking forward to it, but on the other hand I'm worried about how I'll feel mentally and physically from doing too little while also eating and drinking more than normal.

Do other things aside from “working out” that get your body moving and make you feel good. On a recent trip I did a lot of walking and swimming and added in peloton barre, yoga and stretching classes on the app without having to bring workout gear.

Yes, this sounds great!

I do often run on vacation (I enjoy it) but switching to this type of regimen is a good idea.

I'm like you - really never take a day off. When I'm on vacation, though, I really take a break from gym-focused stuff, and try to get my exercise in through walking, bike rides, swimming - things I can do with my children. So definitely it's time off, but I still hit most of my exercise metrics, albeit at much lower intensity.
